Master Bedroom

The layout of your master bedroom will depend on the size and shape of the room. You'll also want to consider the placement of any windows and closets as you're arranging your furniture.

THE MASTER SUITE

Got the space? Time to fill it with all the things you've been wanting in your bedroom. Go for a king or California king-size bed and use dressers on either side instead of bedside tables. To really fill up the space, consider using part of your room as a sitting area by adding a couch or accent chairs, or create a work corner with a desk and bookshelves. However, keep in mind, just because you've got the space, doesn't mean you have to fill every inch of it. Think about what you need (and always dreamed of) in your room and lay out the furniture and decor accordingly.

FULL-SIZE BEDROOMS

A large bedroom means you've got enough square footage to come up with a layout that works for you. Consider using your bed (go with a full or queen-size bed) and a large rug as the anchor and build from there. Maybe place nightstands on either side as well as a dresser on the opposite wall facing the bed, plus a wardrobe for extra storage if you need it. Add a comfy armchair and floor lamp to create a cozy nook in the room.

SMALL ROOMS

With less space to work with, you'll want to prioritize your absolute must-have pieces and maximize the area you have. This could mean pushing the bed into a corner to leave room for other furniture or opting for a twin or full-size bed. Consider downsizing (comfortably, of course) to a smaller chest of drawers or a bench to a storage ottoman. Or use what you've got for multiple purposes—place the dresser next to your bed to use it as your vanity, too. Strategically placed mirrored furniture can also help make the room appear larger.

Tip: Small space? A storage bed offers built-in organization.

Guest Room

You want to provide your guest with a comfortable space for their visit. Consider a full-size bed or perhaps two twin beds in order accommodate all sleeping arrangements. A nightstand, plus a dresser or wardrobe, should provide more than enough storage space for guests to unpack and feel at home. If you've got the space, add a chair with a small desk, too.

Tip: Flowers on the nightstand or dresser are a nice touch to make your guest feel welcome.

Kids' Room

Whether it's a single or shared room, make sure you have enough room for kids to sleep, play and study. Depending on the size of the room, a twin or full-size bed should be big enough for a child; opt for two twin beds or a bunk bed if the kids are sharing a room. Deck out the space with a bookcase to showcase photos, trophies and favorite reads, as well as a desk (or two) for homework and study time. A dresser or wardrobe is essential for organizing their clothes—and a storage bed will offer the added bonus of extra drawers for tucking away toys and knickknacks.

Nursery/Baby Room

Preparing for a new addition to the family? Setting up the nursery or baby room might mean prioritizing function and flow over all else. This means the easiest access to the crib and changing table (you'll thank us when those late-night diaper changes or feedings come around). A few things to keep in mind? Keep the crib away from the doorway or window to avoid waking baby up from cool drafts or bright lights. Also, create a comfy spot for mom or dad for feeding, burping or bonding time—a comfy chair or rocker plus an ottoman, glider or footrest is perfect!
