Mattress Sizes: Find Your Best Fit

Buying a mattress that's too small is one of the common mistakes a new bed buyer can make—let us help you. Macy’s carries every single mattress size, and our team of knowledgeable experts can educate you about which size works best with the space you have. Whether you’re buying for yourself, planning for a little one or redoing a tween’s room or guest room, check out our helpful tips for choosing the best size mattress.

Baby’s First Bed = The Crib Mattress

Most measure 27.5" x 52". Get your little one's crib ready with a mattress that usually features a waterproof covering and a snug fit into the bed frame. Also, most crib mattresses should be firm and are generally made of foam or innerspring. A good way to measure firmness is to push down on the mattress to see how resistant the mattress is. Take your pick of a firm innerspring or foam mattress. Eventually the time will come when your toddler outgrows his or her crib, generally, when they are at least 35 inches in height or 2 years old.

Small Space Saver = The Twin Mattress

Measures 39" x 75". Typically designed for one adult or child, the twin bed fits small spaces and tight squeezes, from kids' and guest rooms to dorms and vacation homes. Specialty beds like trundle beds, daybeds and hi-risers often use a twin mattress also.

If You Can Find Room for a Few More Inches = The Twin XL Mattress

Measures 39" x 80". The twin XL adds a bit of extra length, making it a more comfortable choice for tall sleepers. It is perfect for dorm rooms or those living in small spaces.

A Solid Option for You + One = The Full Mattress

Measures 54" x 75". The smallest option for sleeping 2 people comfortably, the full mattress is a step up for kids graduating from a twin mattress and is a good option for smaller spaces. Full mattresses are a good option for someone living in a small apartment or home. If you live alone and have occasional company, full mattresses are solid, versatile option.

A Roomier Choice for Two = The Queen Mattress

Measures 60" x 80". A little bit more wiggle room makes this 2-person sleeper the most popular choice for master suites and guest rooms. The queen mattress is available with standard or split box springs. Split box springs make it easier to maneuver through narrow stairwells, elevators and door frames.

Make the Most of a Master Suite = The King Mattress

Measures 76" x 80". Adding even more space for 2 individuals, the king bed is 16" wider than the queen, offering a comfortable amount of room (38" of space width-wise per person) to move around without disturbing the other side of the bed. The king mattress is commonly used in master suites and comes with a split box spring, which is easier to manage when moving.

Space is Not a Factor = California King Mattress

Measures 72" x 84". A bit more length makes the California king the smart choice for taller individuals. What’s the difference between a king mattress vs. California king mattress? A spacious 2-sleeper found in master suites, the California king is only slightly narrower than a traditional king and still provides 36" of space per sleeper. It comes with a split box spring for easy maneuvering and moving.

What else should I consider when picking a mattress?

In addition to your room size, you need to consider the bedroom accessories you want in your space and level of comfort you prefer:

  • Will you have room for two nightstands on either side of the bed or will the bed be pushed up against the wall only allowing room for one?
  • Can you afford the cost of sheets? There’s a significant price difference between twin sheets and California king sheets.
  • Pillows make a big difference when you’re putting your bed together—be sure to get as many or a few as you like.
  • How thick should your mattress be? You mattress should be thick enough to provide adequate comfort and support.

What type of mattress foundation should I choose?

Build your bed and transform the way you sleep from the ground up with box springs, frames, bases and more.

A box spring foundation is usually made of a wooden frame with springs inside. Box springs are generally used as a supportive base and placed over a bed frame to raise the height of the mattress.

  • Standard profile box springs measure 9" in height and are the most common box spring foundations.
  • Low profile box springs are usually 5" in height. This lower design decreases the total height of the bed for an easier, more natural motion when getting in and out of bed. It's also the perfect solution for higher bed frames or higher mattresses.
  • Split box springs are made up of 2 separate box springs, making it much easier to maneuver around tight staircases, corners and narrow spaces. We offer the option of a split box spring for queen beds. Please note: All king and California king beds come with split box springs.

Bed frames are the part of the bed that supports and provides a foundation for the box spring and mattress, while also raising it off the ground. They are often made of metal or wood, with side rails for edge support and a center bar to give larger mattresses optimal support.

A bunkie board is a great alternative foundation if your mattress doesn't require a box spring. This can be used for daybeds and bunk beds. This thin platform is usually covered with upholstery and is a great low-profile option.

Adjustable bases offer customized comfort and support with electrically powered mechanisms that can bend, elevate and adjust the head or foot of the mattress. An adjustable base makes it easy to read in bed, watch TV or treat your body to a well-supported, well-aligned rest. They often include a remote for convenience, and some newer models even offer easy-to-reach outlets, lights, speakers, massage features, zero-gravity positions to help alleviate pain and more.
