What is a Duvet?
Stemming from the French word for “down,” (oui, oui—now you know it’s fancy) a duvet is a super-soft fabric sack that’s typically solid white and filled with down or a down-alternative material. It is used to provide warmth and comfort on your bed and ideal for a good night's sleep. You will often see duvets encased in a removable fabric cover (known as a duvet cover) to help protect the duvet and keep it clean.
What is the Difference Between a Comforter, Duvet and Duvet Cover?
Although these terms are often interchanged, there are definitely differences between them. Let’s uncover the facts:
• A comforter refers to bedding that is often colored or patterned, rather than solid white, like a duvet. A comforter is commonly comprised of a synthetic material, although it can also be found filled with down.
• A duvet can also be referred to as a down comforter. A duvet is filled with a down or down alternative most of the time.
• A duvet cover is not essential, but you might want to purchase a duvet cover along with a duvet. Duvet covers encase the duvet with ties, zippers or button closures and come in a nearly endless choice of colors and patterns. The cover is made to keep the duvet fresh. Standard comforters do not need a cover.
Shopping Tip: At Macy’s, you’ll find over 400 duvet covers to choose from. We also have a large selection of duvets,
which we refer to as down comforters or down alternative comforters. We told you these terms were interchangeable!
Duvets are made with different materials, weights and even thread counts. Find out which suits your snooze style!
Choose the Fill:
1. Down. A lightweight warmth that provides superior breathability, it’s hard to top the power of down. For a duvet that’s truly only comprised of down, look for the words “100% down,” “pure down” or “all down.” We’re 100% down for this luxury duvet!
2. Feather/Down. If the duvet is only labeled as “down,” it may contain feathers as well. Even though feathers don’t insulate as well, this combination is a more affordable option when compared to all down.
3. Down Alternative. The perfect solution if you are allergic to feathers or down. Down alternative is generally made of synthetic materials that have a similar feel to down. You can sometimes find 100% cotton or wool-filled duvets. However, if it is labeled as down alternative, it will most likely be made of polyester.
Shopping Tip: Down alternative is hypoallergenic and less expensive than 100% down or down/feathers. Keep in mind, duvets with this fill are usually heavier and less breathable than the real thing. If it’s in the bedding budget and allergies aren’t a concern, go with down!
Choose the Weight:
Do you usually get warm at night? No sweat! Lightweight duvets are ideal for those with warm body temperatures and for those who live in warmer climates (or for the spring and summer seasons).
Not too hot, not too cold, just right…this one’s for you, Goldilocks! Medium-weight duvets can be used all year round and are perfect for moderate body temperatures.
Show those harsh winter nights who’s boss! Heavyweight duvets are great for those who live in cold climates or for those with cold body temperatures. If you experience all four seasons, grab a heavyweight duvet for the coldest winter months.
Change it up as often as you like. Duvet covers can be easily swapped out for a new look—it’s like a mini bedroom makeover! You can even go with a duvet cover set. These typically include a cover with two matching pillow shams. We also love linen, velvet, cotton sateen and flannel duvet covers!
If you have a duvet wrapped in a cover, you can regularly take the cover off to launder without having to machine wash the duvet itself. We suggest washing your duvet cover every month. If you have a white duvet cover, you will want to wash it more often to keep it white.
Macy’s PSA—make your bed the European way and ditch the top sheet. All you need is the duvet and duvet cover. Fewer layers mean that you can quickly make your bed in the morning—save that precious time for more important activities, like enjoying a cup of coffee (or two)!
Duvets are designed to be ultra-plush. Get that hotel level comfort dream bed with a super soft duvet. Who wouldn’t love a sink-into-your-bed level of fluffiness? We definitely would!
If your linen closet space is limited, a duvet is the way to go. You’ll only need one duvet, which stays on your bed year-round. This frees up storage space in your linen closet so you'll have plenty of room for multiple duvet covers. Each one only takes up a little more space than a sheet.
Shopping Tip: We also love duvets and duvet covers because they are available in just as many sizes as your standard comforters. Macy’s carries twin, twin XL, full, queen, king and California king duvet cover sizes!
Now that you’ve decided on a duvet and duvet cover duo (we approve!), learn how to put the duvet into its cover correctly. Macy’s can help prevent you from getting tangled in the linens. Follow the steps—you’ll be a bed-making champ in no time!
1. Start by turning your (freshly laundered) duvet cover inside out.
2. Lay it on the bed with the opening of the cover at the bottom.
3. Place the duvet insert on top of the cover and tie it to the cover at each corner. If the cover doesn’t have ties, make sure the duvet insert and cover are neatly aligned.
4. Starting at the top, roll the two layers together (like you’re rolling a sushi roll or cake roll).
5. Once you’ve made it to the open end at the bottom, reach in and turn each corner inside out.
6. Button (or zip) it up, enclosing the roll.
7. Unroll it, which should be a mixture of unrolling and pulling apart the duvet cover from the roll. 8. Finally, shake it out. Ta-da! A perfectly made bed.
8. Finally, shake it out. Ta-da! A perfectly made bed. A bed that’s so pretty (and easy to make) you just might want to crawl back under the covers for a few more minutes. Don’t mind us, we’ll be here until further notice…
