How to Measure Shoe Size and Width?
Follow our easy instructions to measure your shoe size and width. Our shoe size charts and converters above make it easy to figure out your exact size.
How to measure your instep and arch? Follow these steps to measure your instep:
- Find the highest point at the top of your foot.
- Wrap the measuring tape around your foot, typically in the middle, and record the measurement.
How to measure insoles? Follow these steps to measure your insoles:
- Pick your best-fitting pair of shoes.
- Remove the insole and measure it using a fabric tape measure.
- If you can’t remove the insole, then measure the inside of your shoe instead.
- Record your measurement.
How to measure your calves? Follow these steps to measure your calves:
- Wrap a measuring tape around the fullest part of your calf.
- Record your measurement.
- Choose your normal shoe size, and go up or down depending on how snug they feel.
- For boots, keep in mind that standard calf width boots are 14 inches and under, while wide-calf boots are between 15 inches and up.
Need an extended size or wider width? More choices, more styles. Macy's makes it easy to narrow down or widen your options. Simply shop by shoe type, size, width, brand or more.
- Women with wide feet: If you have a wider foot, look for shoes that come in wide width or extra wide width, this is indicated by a W or WW next to the size option.
- Women with narrow feet: If your foot is on the narrower side, look for an N next to your size—that indicates narrow shoes.
How women's shoes and heels should fit? Women's shoes and heels should feel snug, but not too tight. It's important to have a little wiggle room.
Tips to keep in mind when measuring your shoe size
- Always size up when in-between sizes, but be careful not to buy a size that's too large.
- You can also read customer reviews to see which shoes people like most. They'll often tell you how the shoe fits in regard to whether it runs small, large, or is true to size.
- A good rule of thumb? Go with how the shoes feel rather than the size number—it can vary depending on the type of shoe and brand. Visit your local Macy’s to try on shoes in person whenever possible.
