Known as "The Florida Store," Burdines opened in 1898 in the burgeoning city of Miami. As the city grew, business boomed. The store quickly branched out, even launching a mail order service in Latin America, which made it a popular choice for soldiers stationed overseas. As Florida emerged as an international tourist destination, Burdines became a well-known name, as Macy's is today.
