Built on the Quaker principles of honest trade, Strawbridge's opened its doors to Philadelphia shoppers in 1868. Owners Justus Strawbridge and Isaac Clothier transformed the 3-story building that had previously housed Thomas Jefferson's office with an impressive 5-story structure. The enterprising duo was also one of the first to see retail opportunities outside of major cities, and sparked a trend by opening Strawbridge's stores in local suburbs.
