Macy’s milestones

1858

Rowland H. Macy opened R.H. Macy & Co. as a dry-goods store in New York City. First-day sales totaled $11.06.

1859

Macy’s first-year sales were approximately $85,000 with an advertising budget of $2,800.

1861

Macy’s was the first retailer to welcome Santa Claus into the store.

1874

Macy’s debuted the first holiday-window display of any retailer.

1902

Macy’s moved to Herald Square in New York City, our headquarters to this day.

1924

Macy’s Herald Square location became the largest store in the world following completion of the 7th Avenue addition.

1924

10,000 people watched Macy’s first parade, now known as Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®.

1934

Macy’s set modern merchandizing standards by grouping single sizes with a range of style, color, and price.

1939

Macy’s president Fred Lazarus Jr. persuaded President Roosevelt to move Thanksgiving earlier in November, extending the shopping season.

1946

Macy’s Flower Show debuted as the first-ever department store floral showcase at our Union Square store in San Francisco.

1947

Macy’s was featured prominently in the film Miracle on 34th Street, tying Santa to our iconic NYC headquarters in Herald Square where he greets children every year at Santaland.

1976

Macy’s held its first 4th of July Fireworks® show. It’s now the largest Independence Day fireworks display in the nation.

1985

I.N.C. International Concepts, a Macy’s private label brand, launches.

1996

Macys.com launched, extending our footprint to digital.

2015

Macy’s launched Backstage off-price stores.
