Kids’ Books

Whimsical adventures to inspire imagination. Timeless tales of good and evil. Stories that inspire exploration. Oh, what fun! There are great reasons to check out children’s books, and the Barnes & Noble bookshop at Macy’s has so many good reads from classic fairy tales to translated versions of popular children’s books in Spanish.

Children’s Books for Toddlers (And Younger)
It’s never too early to get them off to a great start. Even before they’re old enough to hold a book – or even focus – babies love hearing your voice as you read them bedtime stories. It’s a cozy ritual they’ll embrace for years to come! Once they can grasp, let them take charge with a sturdy board book. Books with touch-and-feel features offer the next challenge. Picture books that let them create their own stories are great for developing imagination.

    Kids’ Books for Preschoolers
Once children are past the toddler stage, they’ll want to have more of a say in their literary selections. Stories involving beloved characters, such as Paw Patrol books or Bluey books, are popular picks. You’ll get to relive part of your childhood, too, with children’s books by authors such as Eric Carle. Preschool also is the perfect time to start having valuable discussions, and classic children’s books such as “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein are great conversation-starters.

Popular Children’s Books for Emergent Readers
As children advance toward kindergarten, they may want more hands-on literary journeys. Scholastic has many clean-and-wipe books for kids that help with kindergarten readiness by letting them trace numbers and letters. Though some books from their early years will still work as they learn to read, the emphasis now is on more complex sentences and less reliance on pictures. The “Step into Reading” system, numbered one through three makes it easy to pick the right level of challenge. It offers a wide variety of subjects, too, from super heroes to Barbie to Disney books.

    Books for Independent Readers
Though they’re reading on their own now, there’s still a lot you can do to encourage the habit. Buddy reading, where you read one page aloud and the child the next, lets you keep enjoying one-on-one time with younger children. Once they’re firmly established as readers, it’s time to start selecting materials that cater to their interests, such as National Geographic for Kids. Even as children advance to the teen years, reading the same books they are gives you something to talk about. Bonus points: You’ll probably enjoy re-reading “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl as much as they do!

Fuel their love of learning with kids’ books, found right here at Macy’s.
