Sharpeners and Steels

If you are the chef of the house, chances are you have all the essentials in your kitchen to prepare a delicious meal. But are your kitchen knives as sharp and functional as they should be? If you’re in the market for some shiny new meal prep tools, shop knife sharpeners and steels, available at Macy’s. Let’s take a look at the most useful types of sharpeners and steels. Don’t forget the cutting board!

Common Types of Sharpeners & Steels

Chef’s Knives. The most common steels found in the kitchen are chef’s knives. They typically have a tapered handle, a fine, sharp edge and are cleverly designed to rock on the cutting board as you use it to cut meats and dice veggies.

Paring Knives. A mini version of a chef’s knife for smaller tasks like peeling potatoes, chopping berries and slicing cucumbers. Handy!

Serrated Knives. This type of knife is best for foods that have a different texture on the outside than on the inside (think a loaf of fresh pumpernickel or a beefy tomato from the garden). Serrated knives should be longer than your typical knife since it means less sawing motion.

Did You Know. Sharper knives are safer knives! You need to use less force with a sharp knife compared to dull knives that can slip as you slice. Check out a classic honing steel rod or electric knife sharpeners to ensure a sharp, fresh edge. Honing steels are typically found in knife sets, which are helpful if you are just starting out in the kitchen and aren’t too sure what knives to choose. For a more refined knife sharpener there are sharpening stones. The grit level of the stone determines its use. 1000 is for heavy jobs, like knife repair, while a steak knife would use a 4000-6000 grit range.
