With a new introduction by Anthony Arnove, this updated edition of the classic national bestseller reviews the book's thirty-five year history and demonstrates once again why it is a significant contribution to a complete and balanced understanding of American history. Since its original landmark publication in 1980, A People's History of the United States has been chronicling American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version of history taught in schools—with its emphasis on great men in high places—to focus on the street, the home, and the, workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of—and in the words of—America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. As historian Howard Zinn shows, many of our country's greatest battles—the fights for a fair wage, an eight-hour workday, child-labor laws, health and safety standards, universal suffrage, women's rights, racial equality—were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance. Covering Christopher Columbus's arrival through President Clinton's first term, A People's History of the United States, which was nominated for the American Book Award in 1981.

Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United...

Howard Zinn writes distorted on anything of history related to the United States. If you read the references, he lists (that his information supposedly comes from) you find out that he takes out most of the good American's do and embellishes the powers he wants us to think are heroes. You can read the references and see what he distorts. Good historians are usually critical of his work, unless they grew up reading his books and start out with a distorted narrative. He tried to hide his socialism, but facts are that he was full out Communist who did everything he could to give a false representation of the United States.

Exquisite

The history never told of the every-day people who lived it. They are the heroes of history. Well researched and written by a brilliant respected scholar.

Crazy

Can’t believe this is even thought of as history. Very skewed opinion of the facts. Don’t take this as the only account of the history. Do your research and find out how flawed this book is.

Highly Recommended

A top read for anyone that cares about the future of this country and wants to understand the motives of the imperialists, and later politicians and corporations. It clearly explains why those with power and wealth intentionally created divisions among varying groups in this country, which both political parties continue to foster today. Another greater text to read is Exterminate All the Brutes, a book that explains the true motives of imperialists.

A Genealogy of Who We Are As A People

I've felt a disturbing trend across more than 50 years of awareness that our world has been spinning out of control. This account from Zinn's stirring lectures places that experience in context of more than 600 years of history, which until now I've known dimly, understood poorly. I only wish I could have read it earlier in life - that we'd all read it everywhere in this land. Perhaps we'd have acted more with the relentless courage of the people, whose legacy is our common heritage - black, brown, red, white - a humanity needing, wanting to regain control of our lives for the common good.

Great middle of the road, honest look at history

I had heard so many condemnations of Zinn from people who accused him of being a socialist or communist who hated America or something of that sort. I found the book indicating a great love of the United States and its people, including many of the leaders. The difference between Zinn and many others is that he includes a more complete story with references to written sources on successes AND failures of our nation's leaders and our people. He does the same thing with other world leaders. A must read for anybody interested in an honest story on the United States, its history, and its future. A former Indiana governor attempted to have it removed from schools.
