it's a slow start
so... I was more in it for the plot than the spice. the spice was nice. The plot was slow at the beginning and it was gonna be a solid 3.5⭐ until the 85% mark. I was not expecting the twist and it's what brought my stars up lol. overall I enjoyed it!

Great OCD representation, good romance
Phantasma was a solid book. I think my favorite thing about it was the OCD representation. Ophelia suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and the story does not treat her as an organized, but eccentric joke as is typically the case in media. You get to see the inner workings of her mind and it showcases how dreadful OCD can be. Ophelia sees it as a shadowy voice in her head who is always trying to break her and keep her on edge, and the comparison is apt. This is a good romantasy book. The New Orleans spooky carnival setting was fun, I think this would be best read in the fall for maximum vibes. I would have preferred this story to take place over a couple of books to give it more time to cook and for feelings to develop. However, the ending wrapped things up in a unique way and I was satisfied. I do recommend Phantasma to any romantasy readers who aren’t too squeamish for gore.

My top read of 2024!
This was hands down my favorite book of 2024. I was a bit nervous to read it, as I'm someone who prefers light-hearted books with little to no gore. That being said, I flew through this book, devouring every page. I felt as if I was there with the characters, feeling their every emotion while they went through the trials. As someone who does not like gore, I was relieved that I didn't find this to be too much. There was enough to get the message of how dire these games were, without being overkill. I loved the twists and turns in this book and the romance between Ophelia and Blackwell. Because of how good this book was, I was eagerly anticipating the second book in the series, Enchantra (which also didn't disappoint!). I am eagerly awaiting more from this series as they come out.

Amazing Gothic Romance!
What a wonderful and Phantastic world. This book focuses on two sisters, one goes missing and one has to go play a deadly game to find her. Enter Phantasma, where your worst nightmares come alive, and plays tricks on you. I enjoyed the character driven storyline, and the third person POV, the gothic paranormal story set in New Orleans, necromancer FMC, explorations of heaven and hell, OCD and anxiety representation, forbidden romance, and a mysterious phantom MMC. I thought this was a beautiful clash of Caraval and Haunted Mansion with a bit more spice, and hell-ish spirits. The plot twist was interesting and I was thoroughly surprised that this was a standalone book! I was really hoping that this was a series. However, it was an amazing read, with everything you would want and hope for smushed into one book. I cannot recommend this enough. Blackwell and Ophelia are the IT couple when it comes to gothic romances.

Phantasma is wickedly sexy and perfectly bloody.
🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 🔥🔥🔥 Phantasma is wickedly sexy and perfectly bloody. Fall in love in Phantasma, and be cursed for life. Can you resist the temptation? 🩸"You Came." "You called" 🫠 🩸coming into powers 🩸"who did this to you" 🩸wicked curse 🩸a bunch of people die 🩸shadow 🩸ghost sex 🩸"distract me" 🩸OCD representation 🩸Secrets & Betrayal 🩸10/10 for "spicy" talk Phantasma is equal parts plot, spice, and blood and I loved every second. Ophelia Grimm promised her mother that she would take over the family necromancy business while her sister, Genevieve, got to live a normal life--or as normal as one can be when you're sister is the most powerful necromancer in New Orleans. Phantasma is kind of like the Hunger Games arena, but even more deadly and unforgiving. It has a similar structure to the popular dystopian battleground, however, not similar enough to elicit an eye roll. You know the kind of books I'm talking about.🙄 The main character's in Phantasma each play a crucial role in the other's storyline and, I promise, when you meet him...["spoilers" in Dr. River Song's voice]...for lack of a better phrase, when you know, you'll know. The male main character, Blackwell, is powerful, mouthwateringly sexy, and absolutely down bad for Ophelia. There's something about a man who will destroy an army and then crawl to his woman on all fours. Blackwell is the embodiment (no pun intended) of those vibes. 🤌 🎵Songs for Characters🎶 Ophelia Grimm: I found by Amber Run & Family Line by Conan Gray Genevieve Grimm: All The Things She Said by t.A.Tu. Alluring, well written & fantastic
Phantasma had me hooked from the first page, I’ve been a fan of New Orleanean authors for a long time, Anne Rice being my absolute favorite. Kaylie Smith is quickly turning into a new favorite go to author! Her tale of Ophelia’s journey is full of wicked trials, a handsome man (with AHmazing sex scenes) & secrets come to light. Definitely worth a read- can’t wait for the second installment to be released.
