This beautiful new novel by the beloved author of Open House and Talk Before Sleep tells the story of two young people growing up in Mason, Missouri, and how Arthur Moses, a shy young man, becomes the wise and compassionate person readers loved in The Story of Arthur Truluv. Nola McCollum is the most desirable girl in Arthur's class, and he is thrilled when they become friends. But Arthur wants far more than friendship. Unfortunately, Nola has a crush on the wrong Moses - Arthur's older brother, Frank, who is busy pursuing his own love interest and avoiding the boys' father, a war veteran with a drinking problem and a penchant for starting fights. When a sudden tragedy rocks the family's world, Arthur struggles to come to terms with his grief. In the end, it is nature that helps him to understand how to go on, beyond loss, and create a life of forgiveness and empathy. But what can he do about Nola, who seems confused about what she wants in life, and only half aware of the one who loves her most? Full of unforgettable characters and written with Elizabeth Berg's characteristic warmth, humor, and insight into people, Earth's the Right Place for Love is about the power of kindness, character, and family, and how love can grow when you least expect it.

Earth's the Right Place for Love

Earth’s the Right Place for Love stands as one of those happy novels. The main character, Arthur Moses, dearly likes a girl in his school, Nola McCollum. Nola has a serious crush on Arthur’s older brother, Frank. Finally, Arthur and Nola meet and a friendship develops. But Arthur wants more, and steadily pursues Nola. During this time, Frank falls in love with a young teacher in the high school, and they plan to marry and move to New York after Frank graduates. A tragedy happens and so much changes. Nola moves away after graduation. Arthur finds a job. But redemption and happiness finally bring love to Arthur. A short, but poignant story.

Not so great

I was expecting so much after reading other reviews, but I was disappointed. The story, although sweet was extremely long and drawn out. I feel like reading this book was 12 hours I'll never get back. No, I would not recommend.

Heartwarming and unforgettable!

I absolutely loved this book about Arthur Moses. The characters in the book, Nola McCollum, a girl in his class who became an important person in his life, his brother Frank, and his parents, to name a few, are exciting and unforgettable. A sudden tragedy alters Arthur's life forever, and he is forced to confront his grief and figure out how to move on. He also loves Nola unconditionally and is waiting for her to realize that. This novel is beautifully written, heartwarming, and full of beautiful quotes I highlighted while reading.

Loved this book

Earth’s The Right Place for Love by Elizabeth Berg This book is easy to love. It’s one of the most charming teen coming of age stories I have ever read. The characters are endearing and well developed. It is late 1940s Mason, Missouri and brothers Frank and Arthur are best buddies. Frank, a romantic dreamer, is more worldly than Arthur and has lots of tips for catching a girl. Arthur has older neighbor ladies he does odd jobs for who also befriend and advise him. He has an eye on beautiful Nola, so any ideas to be her boyfriend are welcomed. The writing flows and tells a wonderful tale any reader would enjoy. I thank #RandomHouse and #NetGalley for the ARC for my review and mark this a five star winner for Elizabeth Berg.

Memorable and Heartwarming

There are those rare books that are so much more than 5 stars, and this is one of them. Elizabeth Berg has created one of the most memorable characters I have ever encountered in the pages of a book, Arthur Moses (Truluv). This is the story of Arthur during and shortly after high school, and his family, friends, and hometown and the lives they all share together. The author has created a wonderful, heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of Arthur as he overcomes tragedy and grows to becomes a caring, loving, giving young man. The writing is beautiful, and the character development is amazing! This is a book that I just could not put down! I absolutely loved it! And if you haven't already read The Story of Arthur Truluv, add that one to your list as well. Thank you to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for my copy of this book. The opinions in the review are my own.

4.5 sweet heart full stars, rounded up

I first met (main character) Arthur Moses in early 2018. Five years ago, I wrote, “I love you, Arthur. Cloning you would make a better world.” I was delighted to be able to read an ARC of Earth’s the Right Place for Love by Elizabeth Berg, now going back in time and sharing in Arthur’s high school years. Occasionally humor slips onto the pages. “He’d had her cookies before, and he thought this must be the recipe: Get some sawdust. Add water. Bake it.” “There was something about rainy days that could inspire women to come up with all kinds of projects for other people to do.” Berg incorporates all the senses into her descriptions. “She smelled like toast and coffee and ironed things.” (Evocative, though I’m concerned today’s generations will not know what ironed things smell like!) “He liked the familiarity of the things he passed on the neighborhood streets: the arrangements of rocking chairs on front porches, the laundry on the lines out back.” “Arthur liked when he heard the church bells pealing, the resonance so deep he could feel it in his chest.” Sometimes readers just need to go back to ‘simpler times.’ And yet, Berg never oversimplifies. A devastating loss occurs. “But then he went home quickly, back to the work of mourning. It was work. It was hard and heavy and painful, and for the time being anyway, it never stopped. It was on you first thing in the morning and last thing at night. It invaded your dreams. It stole your appetite.” From previous books in the Mason series, I knew how Arthur’s love life would end up. Despite knowing the outcome, Earth’s the Right Place for Love did not disappoint. Berg continues to capture my heart and soul, as I share joy and sorrow with my literary friend, Arthur. (In case you’re wondering, it is a rare thing for this reviewer to have literary ‘friends.’) “And here, sitting on the steps in his pajamas, was Arthur, feeling that he was right where he should be. For him, life was like a gift perpetually ready for the opening.” Thank you, Elizabeth Berg for the chance to visit with my friend and to be reminded of this gift. Thank you, Netgalley and the publisher for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Wonderful Story

Such a lovely and touching story about sixteen year old Arthur. He is a gentle, thoughtful, and caring teen traversing through love, family problems, and learning about life. Guided by his philosophical brother, Frank, Arthur delves into ways to win the girl. A family tragedy derails everyone. Arthur finds compassion and healing from the women he does random chores for. There is so much more to the story and it will bring tears and joy to you. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Beautifully emotional

New to Arthur Moses and Elizabeth Berg but SO GLAD I found them. Thanks to NetGalley and Random House for the chance to review this book Arthur Moses is a high school student growing up in Mason Missouri in 1947. It is a wonderful coming of age story and Arthur is a totally amazing character. Arthur is dealing with family struggles as well as unrequited love. For me each chapter was a little vignette of Arthur's interaction with the people in the town and each was its own delight. The writing sets the scene so vividly I instantly felt I was there. About 2/3 into the book a tragedy occurs. I felt as shocked as the characters and initially refused to believe what had happened. That is how entranced I was with this book. How the author describes the other characters reactions to the tragedy is nothing short of brilliant. It was so meaningful to me. Grief is personal and that was captured so beautiful. It made me love Arthur even more. I really enjoyed the writing style and I sped through this book all the while wanting it to last forever! Can't wait to read the others in the series. This will also be a book to read over and over for me.
