Death at a beauty pageant turns Tita Rosie's Kitchen upside down in the latest entry of this witty and humorous cozy mystery series by Mia P. Manansala. Things are heating up for Lila Macapagal. Not in her love life, which she insists on keeping nonexistent despite the attention of two very eligible bachelors. Or her professional life, since she can't bring herself to open her new cafe after the unpleasantness that occurred a few months ago at her aunt's Filipino restaurant, Tita Rosie's Kitchen. No, things are heating up quite literally, since summer, her least favorite season, has just started. To add to her feelings of sticky unease, Lila's little town of Shady Palms has resurrected the Miss Teen Shady Palms Beauty Pageant, which she won many years ago a fact that serves as a wedge between Lila and her cousin slash rival, Bernadette. But when the head judge of the pageant is murdered and Bernadette becomes the main suspect, the two must put aside their differences and solve the case because it looks like one of them might be next.

Lovely Cozy Mystery!

Lila—silently struggling from the trauma of book no1, starting her new business with her best friends, and avoiding the attention of two very eligible bachelors—is tasked with judging the town pageant, which she won many years ago. But when the head judge is murdered and her cousin becomes a suspect, Lila must put aside everything to solve the case. I read this book almost straight through one night! This cozy mystery was well-paced, well-crafted, full of delicious food and the right amount of familial meddling. It tackled PTSD, therapy stigma, and a host of social issues without making the book feel heavy. I’ll definitely continue with this series.

What a Fab Sequel!

I adored Mia P. Manansala incredible debut, ARSENIC AND ADOBO, and was so excited to be asked by Berkley Publishing to review the fab sequel, HOMICIDE AND HALO-HALO. I found it richer in character development, as protagonist Lila heals from trauma as she works to open Brew-ha Cafe with friends, yet still "cozy" in nature with a compelling mystery I could not guess. Was so glad to catch-up with Lila's crazy lovable family and drool again over lush descriptions of Filipino cuisine. A delicious winner out Feb 8. Thanks to the author, Berkley Publishing Group, Berkley, and NetGalley for the ARC; opinions are mine. #HomicideandHaloHalo #NetGalley

Cozy Mystery

This is a Cozy Mystery series, and this is the second book in the Tita Rosie's Kitchen Mystery series. I have to say I really enjoyed the beginning of this book, but then it got super boring. It just could not hold my attention of any amount of time, so I kept having to re-read the same parts. I ended up DNFing this book just after the 50% mark of this book. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
