One of the most widely read novels of all time, Les Miserables was the crowning literary achievement of Victor Hugo's career. An enormous melodrama set against the background of political upheaval in France following the rule of Napoleon I, the novel tells the story of the peasant Jean Valjean unjustly imprisoned and hounded by his nemesis, the magnificently realized police detective Javert. A monumental classic dedicated to the oppressed, Les Misérables captures the entirety of life in nineteenth-century France.

Hapgood translation!

For anyone who, like me, was wondering who translated this edition, I cross-referenced it with my other (credited) translation and can confidently say this is the Hapgood translation. Really wish this had been included anywhere in the actual physical copy of the book, but it's a beautiful edition and Hapgood was the best of all possible outcomes, so it all works out!

Love this copy, but....

My problem with this copy is there is no credit given to the translator. I have no idea who translates this version and google searches show results for three different translations for this edition and I have no idea who is correct until I buy other versions to compare. The book is like all other B&N leather bound books it is beautiful and well worth the money! As a bookworm it is just wrong to not credit the translator. What is even stranger is that the artist who did the cover and insets is credited but the translator is not.
