Shoes Size Run Large

Purchased these shoes online early to wear to an event on Oct 10, 25. When I put the shoes on they are too big so I was unable to wear them. I purchased a 10 and they fit like they could be a 10 1/2. Want to exchange them for a size smaller but was unable to because it was two days past the return date, even though I just wanted a smaller size. I can't believe you only have a 30-day return/exchange policy. Now I know to try items on that I purchase online the day I get them or just purchase elsewhere with a better exchange policy.
