Easy read

This book was not a good story, Robert Crais is very good at telling a story, but this one just didn’t do it for me. I’ve read all of his books, but the story here was not interesting and was all over the place. Didn’t like it.

Heart, humor and suspense!

I have loved private investigator Elvis Cole and his enigmatic partner Joe Pike for so many years! Racing the Light is filled with quite the cast of quirky characters! Possibly a few too many... This time around Elvis is hired by an eccentric older woman who is trying to locate her missing son, and Elvis is pulled in every way imaginable as he follows clues. (It's too bad his Felix the Cat clock doesn't help him out once in a while!) I was thrilled to see Lucy and Ben again but I wish Joe had played a larger part in this book. As usual, this Elvis/Joe book is filled with heart, humor, and suspense. I think I would have appreciated it even more if the plot had been a wee bit less convoluted. Having said that, however, I can't wait to read the next book (or books) in the series!!!

Elvis and Joe Pike are back!

Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are back and us readers are the beneficiaries. A fast paced story, well developed characters, and a dry sense of humor made this a unputdownable mystery. If you are new to the Elvis Cole mysteries, you can start anywhere but I recommend starting with the first one and read them all. Highly recommended Thanks to NetGalley and G.P. Putnam's Sons for the advanced reader copy.

Racing the Light Observations

It is important to mention that Robert Crais is one of my favorite detective series writers, and is an author who constantly ups his game with each new novel. This is his 23rd book, 19th featuring Elvis Cole and Joe Pike, who are such a wonderful duo (like Spencer and Hawk or Stephanie Plum and Lula). It is always a special occasion when a new Crais novel hits the shelves, and with a November release the holiday season is here and an early gift to his readers. Another great thing about his books is that each one is a self-contained story, so if you have not read Crais or his Elvis Cole books yet, Racing the Light is a great one to start on. This newest book in the series is another character driven, dialogue abundant thriller that pits Cole and Pike into the world of conspiracy theories, podcasts, and the timeless secrets and lies. You won't read a tighter, more engaging and enthralling thriller this year than Crais' Racing the Light. It has an old school charm, while never feeling stale, predictable, or out of touch with the times. As Crais comes from a background as a TV cop show writer, this brings such a higher level of accessibility to his books; they feel so simple and easy to read because of his skills and love of L.A and his characters. Enjoy book #19!

Elvis is the best!

I was so stoked to read the newest Elvis and Joe book and it did not disappoint! Elvis has agreed to help find a missing guy who is a podcaster and reports on....aliens?? But the more Elvis looks into the disappearance, the stranger things become. Joe Pike, of course, is brilliant and as uncommunicative as ever. And I was so excited to see some old friends return (no spoilers here!!!)!!! Overall, the book was really engaging and I read it as fast as I could because I needed to know how it ended!

Great series

Robert Crais pens another of my favorite series - the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike crime novels. The 19th entry is the newly released Racing the Light. Elvis Cole is a private investigator in Hollywood, California. Cole's methods are sometimes unorthodox, and his manner is irreverent, but he's a dogged detective who sees every job to it's conclusion. I love his tenacity. His partner is Joe Pike, a man of few words, but lots of action. Jon Stone also has a role in this latest. Their newest client is Adele, who comes to the office with no appointment and two 'minders'. Her adult son is missing and she's brought payment in cash. According to her, the cops aren't doing much, so he hears her out. She starts talking about conspiracies and he almost....almost says no. But he's intrigued. Well, kudos to Crais for this 'absolutely no way I could have ever predicated' plot! Multilayered, intriguing and yeah - conspiratorial. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll stop there. The case is great, but for me it's the characters that are the stars. They have personal storylines, with Elvis's taking the stage in this book. His past is back in the form of an ex-girlfriend and her son. And again - the 'I got your back' relationship between Elvis and Joe. Crais' writing is wonderful. I can't put his books down. They're action filled and move very quickly as one clue leads to another. But there's also humor woven in - Elvis's dialogue is often not what you have expected. Another great read from Robert Crais that I finished too quickly. I'm looking forward to Robert Crais' next book. And if you're a fan of John Sandford's Davenport and Flowers books, you need to read Robert Crais.

Worth the wait!

It's been three years! Good to see you again friends. Elvis Cole is a PI in Los Angeles and his partner Joe Pike are back! I enjoyed every book in this series that I've read so far. This is book #19, "Racing the Light" can be read as a standalone. I still have some catching up to do as there are recurring characters that I want to know how they initially met. A retired Stanford professor hires Cole to find her missing adult son Josh. Josh is elevating his podcast show "In Your Face" to the next level with his next secret project. Co-producing the show is his childhood buddy Ryan who appears to be hiding something from Cole. Another friend, Skylar an ex-adult movie star & escort is a guest on the show who also can't be reached. As Cole digs deeper, he starts to wonder about the mom. Why does a retired professor have security protection? Why is Josh's house bugged with foreign surveillance system? It doesn't look like Cole is the only one searching for Josh. Cole asked Jon Stone, an old friend in private military contracting to help as well. And what a character this guy is! Stone is a cool guy that brings a lot of humor to lighten the intensity. This is a suspenseful detective story with interesting characters. I enjoy the pace and witty humor along with the mystery that keeps me on my toes. Towards the end, the short chapters really add extra tension. Highly recommended! Thank you Penguin Group, G.P. Putnam's Sons, and Netgalley for my DRC.
