NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER, Engaging and fast-paced, this gripping coming-of-age novel of chess, feminism, and addiction speeds to a conclusion as elegant and satisfying as a mate in four. Now a highly acclaimed, award-winning Netflix series. Eight year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of sixteen, she's competing for the U. S. Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Was ok. Enjoyed the show better.

I would rate this a 3.5 I had watched the Netflix series of The Queen's Gambit and enjoyed it. Made me want to read the book. I did like the show better than the book only for a few, mostly one, reason. The main plot is playing Chess. With the book you hear Anne Harmans thoughts about her moves where as the show didn't go into every detail whereas you just watched the game take place. However there were times I didn't know what Anne was thinking exactly or how she felt. That's where I did enjoy the book more. I don't know if I would have enjoyed the book if it wasn't for me watching the show already. The show and the book followed very closely. I might would recommend watching the show first if you don't know about Chess.

Great for Chess lovers!

I wanted to read this before I watched the Netflix show, and I'm glad I did. It was good, albeit a bit dry and difficult to get through. If I wasn't a chess player, I would have been bored or gotten lost. Beth's journey was enough to keep me interested, though, and I'm happy to have finished it!

Definite page turner

Watched the series before knowing it was a book. There are additional details and character development in the book that was not included in the show, for obvious reasons. Almost wanted to read more slowly so the journey would not end. Now to read some of his other writings.
