National Bestseller. Winner of The Pulitzer Prize. A searing, post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son's fight to survive, this "tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy's stature as a living master. It's gripping, frightening and, ultimately, beautiful" (San Francisco Chronicle). A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing, just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food and each other. The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world entire," are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of- ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation. Look for Cormac McCarthy's new novel, The Passenger.

Had me on the edge of my seat

The Road begins exactly where the story will continue to take place over the next couple hundred pages: on the road. The man, never named in the book, is struggling day by day with his growing exhaustion, hunger, and concern for his son. His son, also not named, can’t understand how they are the good guys but they never seem to try and help the lone man or boy they find on their trek toward the western coast of the Americas. However, they are both united in one purpose: to keep the other alive so they won’t have to go it alone. With the cold setting in, they know that they won’t survive long in areas with harsh winters, so they fight their way to the hope of better conditions at the sea. Through Cormac McCarthy’s expert structuring, what could seem to be a repetitive tale of near-death experiences instead keeps his reader on the edge of their seat, wondering at every turn “what happens next?” This suspenseful tale stays with its reader long after they finish the last sentences of the book.

Great book

Real good book. It took me about 20 pages to get into the writing style, and then I didn't want to put it down. This is my first Cormac McCarthy book, but I will be reading more.

The Road was action packed

A father and son travel along a road in a dystopian novel while they try to avoid blood cults, which they call "the bad guys" and survive, with a sudden ending. This novel was action packed and I was consumed the entire time I was reading it. Even though there were some graphic themes and sad ones as well, it was nonetheless entertaining, and added to the book. I kept getting shocked reading along with this or kept stressing out when they were in bad situations. I am very convinced you should get this book if you want to experience the same fun. It was for about any reading level as it was easy and quick to understand, and a moderately short read for how thick it was. It was paced well, good themes, and had good twists and turns.

Must-read about father/son in apocalyptic world

In another hundred years, literary critics and English professors will all say that Cormac McCarthy was one of the most gifted authors of American literature of our time. If I had to choose, The Road is probably my favorite of all his works, despite the fact that I cry like a baby every time I read it. Even though this is my fourth (?) reading, I still discovered new details and fell in love with it all over again. McCarthy has an unusual style marked by lots of very long sentences with almost no punctuation. It can be a bit disorienting at first, but if you can just let yourself “hear” it inside your head, it is extremely vivid. It is a bit like reading Faulkner or Hemingway—a truly unique voice that is unlike any other writer and a joy to experience. If you haven’t read The Road, you are missing out! But fair warning, you need Kleenex for this one.

A Modern Classic!

"The Road" by Cormac McCarthy is a Post-Apocalyptic Fiction Story and a Modern Classic! The setting, an unidentified location in what was once known as the United States, is now part of a post-apocalyptic world. A nameless disaster has turned the landscape into a charred wasteland. It's ashen and cold, a coldness that goes straight through you. All wildlife has disappeared, what remains is a threatening wildness roaming through the land. It's a tangible shift in morality as society continues to disintegrate. The man with his young son are constantly on the move and his focus is on their daily survival, at all costs. It's a constant struggle to find food, warmth, and safeness. The son doesn't understand how survival has altered the lines between right and wrong and he has many questions for the man in a quest for reassurance... "The Road" is a Post-Apocalyptic Fiction story written by Cormac McCarthy that received the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction in 2007. After listening to the audiobook narrated by Tom Stechschulte, there is no question in my mind why this book is worthy of this award and recognized as a Modern Classic within the Post-Apocalyptic Fiction genre. McCarthy's writing is simple, the sentences are brief, and the dialogue clipped. It's a writing style that makes the emotions feel intentionally reserved and it sets the tone of the story. The man and the boy are the two main characters with few secondary characters seen or heard from along their arduous journey on the road to the coast. Often without food for days, chronically exhausted, they travel side-by-side without much conversation, yet their connection is undeniably palpable. How does a story of hopelessness and darkness keep the reader as enthralled as I was? My thoughts go to the author's minimally descriptive prose, poetic writing, and storytelling. This is a story of a father's love for his son as much as it is one about post-apocalyptic survival. The quiet, endearing, and raw emotions of this story are what pulls this reader into the story, like a magnet. "The Road" is a Post-Apocalyptic Fiction story I will remember as one that is as minimal and stark as it is powerful and thought-provoking. This beautifully written story will immediately take a place of honor on my "favorites" shelf and I highly recommend it to everyone who reads this review! 5⭐
