Why Modern Farmhouse is the Anti-Trend for Everyone
Ever chase a trend only to find that by the time you nail it, like really get it right, it’s no longer a thing? (Remember peplum tops or skinny overalls…yeah, us, too.) It’s one thing to run this race with your wardrobe, but when it comes to our homes, no thanks!
Enter Modern Farmhouse. Everyone’s favorite anti-trend—it’s more about that feeling of home & less about a set of rules to follow. It’s that aaahhh of relief that washes over you the second you get home. It’s just being really into the space you spend countless hours in.
The whole thing sounds dreamy to us, so we sat down with our Home Fashion Director, Roberson Keffer, to get the 411 on Modern Farmhouse & to (successfully) convince 3 other fashion directors (with 3 distinctly different styles) that it’s the vibe they’ve always been looking for, too. Let’s dig in.
Style #1: Elegant & classy
—Lauren Wilner, Women’s Fashion & Beauty Director
Contrary to all the neutral-only, shiplap-heavy inspo you’ll see everywhere (& don’t get us wrong, we LOVE shiplap), Modern Farmhouse is anything but predictable. It’s not simply monochromatic but also an infusion of rich hues, sleek shapes & artful elements that play really well together.
Roberson’s tip: “To keep things elevated AND exciting, focus on infusing pattern, gem-inspired colors & texture, texture, texture. A painterly dinnerware pattern pairs amazingly with deep navy linens, glam gold flatware & a dark dining table. When in doubt, add a pop.”
Roberson’s picks for Lauren:
Style # 2: Traditional Meets Contemporary
—Stephanie Muehlhausen, Women’s Fashion Director
Ok, we know, we know—when you close your eyes, Modern Farmhouse tends to call up images of an idyllic, rustic barn & wood everywhere, but that’s just not so. This look is all about updated silhouettes, nods to mid-century design & everything that feels new & fresh.
Roberson’s tip: “Not to sound cliché, but opposites really do attract. Pair bold colors with clean whites & soft details. A cobalt blue sofa isn’t the expected farmhouse decor & that’s great because it’s an ideal contemporary counterpart for more rustic elements like distressed wood.”
Roberson’s picks for Stephanie:
Style #3: Classic with Confidence
—Durand Guion, Men’s Fashion Director
Classic is not code for same ol’, same ol’. Instead, dig deep into the color palette you love, showcase every gradient of those hues & work in hints of metallic, striking leather & touches that surprise, like a tufted headboard.
Roberson’s tip: “Classic colors tend to be more subdued, but this offers so much room for bursts of glam. A copper stand mixer can live on your kitchen counter & instantly brighten up a minimalist space. A chunky throw & bold dec pillows soften the edges on a handsome leather sofa. Think juxtaposition.”
Roberson’s picks for Durand:
Roberson’s final tip: “Remember: the whole heart of this is that it’s Modern Farmhouse, not just farmhouse, so there’s a lot of room to play with contrast, with the thing you might not normally pair, with all different styles & influences. Start small—you will be surprised how much impact a new color, texture or shape will have.”
