What can I expect after making a return?

The way your refund is issued and how long it takes depends on how you paid, where you returned the item, and whether you have proof of purchase.

  • You have proof of purchase: If you have your original receipt, the credit card you used to purchase, your return label or packing slip, you will get a refund in the original form of payment.
  • It was a gift: If you have a gift receipt, a return label or a bridal registry number, you will get a refund in the form of a store credit.
  • You don't have proof of purchase: You may still be eligible for store credit for the item's lowest selling price within the last 180 days.

 

 

 

 

 

  • If merchandise is returned in-store credit is issued immediately, unless it was purchased through one of our Third Party Sellers.
    • Please note that the store will still need to mail the item back to the Third Party Seller to facilitate the refund, this process can take an additional 5-10 business days. The Seller then has 10 business days to receive and process the order
  • Store credit may be issued as an EZ Exchange Card (can be used like a Macy's Gift Card online or in-store) or Merchandise Certificate (can be used in-store only).
  • Refunds going back to a third-party credit/debit card can take an additional 5-7 days to process depending on your financial institution's processing time.

 

 

  • We will credit your account(s) within 10 business days of receiving your return. It may take several days to post activity to your account.
  • For purchases made with multiple forms of payment, your credit accounts will be refunded the amount originally charged and the remaining amount may be issued in the form of a Macy's Happy Returns card or a Merchandise Only Certificate mailed to your billing address in approximately 2–4 weeks.
  • Refunds going back to a third-party credit/debit card can take an additional 5-7 days to process depending on your financial institution's processing time.

 

A Merchandise Only Certificate is a certificate that can only be used in-store and can’t be used for online purchases. Merchandise Only Certificates expire after 2 years.

 

You may receive a Merchandise Only Certificate when:

 

  • You return merchandise without a receipt
  • You return merchandise that was a gift
  • You return merchandise that was purchased with a certificate, gift card or check
  • You return merchandise that was purchased with Star Money or Macy's Money

 

Note: Merchandise Only Certificates may not be used as payment on a credit account.

A gift card, also known as an EZ Exchange Card or a Happy Returns card, may be issued if:

  • You return merchandise without a receipt
  • You return merchandise that was a gift
  • You return merchandise that was purchased with a certificate, gift card or check
  • You return merchandise that was purchased with Star Money or Macy's Money

 

  • Any return credit will be credited back to your Klarna account within 7 to 10 business days.
  • You can check the status of your payments and refunds on purchases made with Klarna on Klarna.com or in the Klarna app.

  • Any return credit will be credited back to your PayPal account within 7 to 10 business days.
  • You can check the status of your payments and refunds on purchases made with PayPal on PayPal.com or in the PayPal App.

  • For Third Party Seller returns sent by mail, allow 10 business days for the seller to receive and process the return (recommended).
  • For in-store Third Party Seller returns, please note that the store will still need to mail the item back to the Third Party Seller to facilitate the refund, this process can take an additional 5-10 business days. The Seller then has 10 business days to receive and process the order.

Returning Items In Store

  • Refunds or store credit are generally issued immediately when the return is processed in store
  • Exception: Items purchased from Third‑Party Sellers

  • Allow 5–10 business days for shipment to the seller
  • Once received, the seller may take up to 10 business days to process the return

  • EZ Exchange Card – Can be used like a Macy’s Gift Card, online or in store
