An addictive psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist that's burning up Instagram, Freida McFadden's The Housemaid is perfect for fans of Ruth Ware, Lisa Jewell, and Verity. Welcome to the family, Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I'll soon learn that the Winchesters' secrets are far more dangerous than my own Every day I clean the Winchesters' beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor. I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew's handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it's hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina's life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband. I only try on one of Nina's pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it's like. But she soon finds out and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it's far too late.

Unpopular Opinion: I Hope the Movie Is Better! 🍿

I’m going with ⭐️⭐️⭐️ because Part 1 had me almost ready to DNF. But Parts 2 & 3 redeemed the story and kept me reading until the end. I had high expectations for this book because sooooo many people gave high ratings. I ended up slightly disappointed because I felt like something was missing from the characters. I wanted to love this one; instead, I just “liked” it. 😕 ...and now there is a movie adaptation that I must watch, if only for comparison purposes. More often than not, the book is better than the movie but, in this case, I hope the movie better than the book.

Gripping Build-Up, Underwhelming Ending

I went into this book with really high expectations because I had just finished another one of her novels that I absolutely loved. The Housemaid definitely hooked me in the beginning — it was fast-paced, tense, and I genuinely wanted to know what was going on behind closed doors. The middle had me on edge, especially once certain truths started to unravel. However, while I enjoyed the ride, the ending didn’t fully land for me. It felt a bit over-the-top and slightly corny compared to the strong buildup earlier in the story. I was hoping for something a little more shocking or psychologically layered, and instead it leaned more dramatic than I expected. That said, it’s still a very readable, binge-worthy thriller. If you enjoy quick pacing, twists, and domestic suspense with bold reveals, you’ll probably have a great time with it. I liked it — I just didn’t love it the way I thought I would.

Fast paced

What I Did Like: +The tone of the book is quickly “oh girl, you in danger” which works! Everything makes you cringe, everything tells you to GET OUT, and that creates this high stress environment. It mirrors Millie’s high stress environment when Nina is around so that is well done. +Each part provides more intrigue, more danger, more answers, and yet more questions. This couldn’t have been told in any other order. The brilliance is really in the delivery. +The book is intended to shock and it does that. There are things that don’t go as you planned and that’s always fun! Plus, you have to appreciate the way things all tie together. Who Should Read This One: -Psychological thriller fans who want something fast paced.

So good!

I read this book in two days after not reading for a while it kept me guessing and turning the pages. I really liked how the author kept referring back to small details sometimes not even important throughout the book. Overall 100% recommend for someone looking for a good thriller will be trying the rest of the series!
