New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult tells the story of a girl who decides to sue her parents for the rights to her own body in this riveting story that tackles a controversial subject with grace and explores what it means to be a good person. Jodi Picoult is widely acclaimed for her keen insights into the hearts and minds of real people. Now she tells the emotionally powerful story of a family torn apart by conflicting needs and a passionate love that triumphs over human weakness. Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate-a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister-and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves. My Sister's Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person.

YA Lit book with a twist

My Sister’s Keeper is one of author Jodie Picoult’s most popular reads. The book follows the story of a thirteen-year-old named Anna who decides to sue her parents for medical emancipation. Since the day she was born, Anna has acted as a donor for her sister Kate who has been diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia. After being told to donate one of her kidney’s to Kate, Anna has had enough, but at the cost of losing her sister? This coming of age story is told by multiple perspectives, with chapters told by Anna’s family members, Anna’s lawyer, and Anna herself. This omniscient-esque POV gives insight into all of the main characters, causing the book to reach a wider audience. Although the book is traditionally meant for young adolescent/adult readers, I think any adult could pick it up and get sucked into the plot. I absolutely loved this book! The plot was exciting and realistic enough to believe that it could actually happen. In addition, the trial reveals that anyone can have the best intentions and still make a decision that ends up hunting someone they care about. And talk about a twist ending! If you’ve seen the movie and think you already know everything about My Sister’s Keeper, you’re in for a ride!
