Winner of the RUSA Award for Best Horror When a young woman clears out her deceased grandmother's home in rural North Carolina, she finds long-hidden secrets about a strange colony of beings in the woods in this chilling novel that reads like The Blair Witch Project meets The Andy Griffith Show. When Mouse's dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be? Answer- pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there's more-Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather's journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants...until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself. Alone in the woods with her dog, Mouse finds herself face to face with a series of impossible terrors-because sometimes the things that go bump in the night are real, and they're looking for you. And if she doesn't face them head on, she might not survive to tell the tale. From Hugo Award-winning author Ursula Vernon, writing as T. Kingfisher, The Twisted Ones is a gripping, terrifying tale bound to keep you up all night-from both fear and anticipation of what happens next.

Overall Enjoyment

I enjoyed the book as a whole. I will say I found the beginning chapters a bit rough to get myself into it, however pushing through it got really good and suspenseful. There was a section in the middle that I didn’t necessarily like or not like, but I understand that it was part of the story and needed the information for the ending. The ending was good, not what I had expected. However find the last chapter very meh. However the plot was really good and I loved the amount of twists and turns. There is humor in the book as well, which I enjoyed. Will say at one part of the book during the tapping on the window ironically it had started to lightly rain at my home and the tapping of the first few rain drops happened at the same time and did make me jump a little bit.

Not a horror, and still not a book worth reading

I picked up this book with my girlfriend as we both enjoy horror but we should've put it back on the shelf after reading that it was in the perspective of a middle aged editor. The protagonist themself gains no depth over the course of the story, nor do any of the other characters. Worse yet, this book is painfully slow, not in length or content, but in rambling pages that could be cut down to a few sentences for the same effect. It was incredibly easy to put this book down as the main perspective was annoying to read. I understand that the first person perspective of this book is supposed to be a cheap gimmick for "writers" but honestly if the main character acknowledges that what she's writing is a book then why would any competent editor allow it to be written in a style less eloquent than an elementary schooler's first draft? The main character is not relatable in the slightest and seems to be self insert for any middle aged person with financial troubles, lacking social skills, and no life direction. The setting and plot are okay and the setting of the hollow especially would be interesting if it were written any other way than it is in this book. If you're looking for a read to enjoy and you're looking at reviews to see if it'll be worth your while, take this as a sign to put this book back down and continue your search elsewhere.

Boring

I bought this a month ago and basically had to force myself to read it. Stereotypical of the south and the main character was bland

Laughing through the character's suffering

Follows the same formula of humor and horror as The Hollow Places. I'm a big ol' fan and liked them both. Also, T Kingfisher is one of the only authors that finds me really enjoying the author's notes. I'm a baby horror reader so learning about the author's inspiration for her stories is fascinating.

Witty and Twisted

The Twisted Ones is T. Kingfisher’s horror about a woman who stumbles upon a terrifyingly twisted world while cleaning out her deceased grandmother’s home. Kingfisher is arguably one of the best horror comedy writers of the moment and she will certainly get you both laughing and looking over your shoulder with this one. The dark, sarcastic humor she (and other horror writers) use can sometimes distract from a story but in The Twisted Ones, it fits in seamlessly with the dark fairy tale-like tale. The humor our narrator, Mouse, and some of the other characters use seems a natural extension of their personalities. It worked really well up against this ghastly, bizarre world that Mouse discovers. Don’t let the humor fool you, this one is creepy. “I twisted myself like the twisted ones” will be your next earworm and you’ll be sneaking glances out your window for skeletal abominations. Eerie, frightening and fun, you’ll fly through the pages of this twisty tale.

Slow

I recently downloaded an audiobook of this story and it took so long to start up that at the end of a couple of hours, yes hours, it finally started to get interesting. I found the main character's personality rather annoying, but not as annoying as her dog. It's a test of patience getting through the slow opening and I feel like it went on too long and could've been trimmed down a lot to save time. The build up was good, if slow. When it finally gets going, it gets going and it has an interesting premise, creepy moments, but I am sadly not holding my breath for that to last. Would I recommend this? Maybe, if you like annoying main characters, their insanely irritating dog, slow buildup, and those few gold nuggets of creepiness interspersed throughout. I am kind of split on it, because I want to like this story, but I feel like it is definitely not my cup of tea.
