Can't get pump protector thing off

Super frustrated! This arrived today. I want to use it but can't get the pump to work. Why? there is a piece of plastic surrounding the stem of the pump that needs to be removed but it is in there SO TIGHT I can't get it off. Looks like a beautiful product but what good is it if I can't pump the soap?!
