I purchased this double boiler to make a seven-minute frosting. It was a splurge but I figured I would use it for years. Wrong. It was far, far too small to be functional. I am sad that in its online product information, there was no description of its uses -- i.e., excellent for melting chocolate for truffles. I ended up returning this item and purchasing Faberware's 2-quart double boiler that was offered by another seller at a quarter of the price.
