Ruined
These used to be great shorts. Now they suck. They got rid of the extra side pocket and the front pockets are so deep that if you put anything in them the white mesh pocket hangs below the bottom of the leg. Whoever made these decisions should rot in hades. I have spoken!

best summer shorts
My go to summer shorts. I have 3 pair for hiking biking swimming they are great. And they looik nice enough as shorts to go from the beach into town etc.

No Phone Pocket
I bought Backcast III in the past and it had a phone pocket - the Backcast IV does not and I am very disappointed. Last year I contacted Columbia and asked them to make the phone pocket larger - I guess they just eliminated it. They should let people know there is no phone pocket.

Watch the Sizes
Great shorts. I have about 10 pairs, different colors. The ones made in Vietnam fit great; the ones of the same size (L6) made in Indonesia are too big.

Older Versions Were Better
These were awesome until they got rid of the plier/utility pocket on the right thigh. Why fix something that wasn’t broke?!

Hole in pocket without even wearing them
Washed them when they came in the mail without wearing them and the pocket stitching already came out. Don't know if it was just not stitched properly at the factory or if it came out in the wash(only once). Either way it's unacceptable on an unworn pair of shorts. Ordered 4 pair, hopefully when I check the others they don't have holes.

SIde pocket gone!
Been wearing these shorts for years. Have probably over fifty pair, as I buy multiple pairs of each color that comes out. Just opened my first pair of Backcast IV, that I ordered in May. Went to use the side pocket, and it was gone! I thought I had received a pair of faulty shorts to start. Being Christmas, I didn't worry about it until I got home. After reading over the specs, I see they eliminated the side pocket. This kind of makes them less desirable for fishing, and other activities. I wear these and Aftco, mainly for the side pocket. So disappointing!

Great feature gone
I have bought a number of PFG shorts for the last 20+ years. The craftsmanship is good and the durability excellent. However, one feature I liked was the side pocket that I could put my phone in. The last three pair that I purchased did not have that feature and looking at the current pictures does not show that pocket feature. There are reasons for redesign, but in this case you have lost a lifetime customer!!! 😢
