Good Belay Jacket

I bought this jacket to serve as an over-the-top belay style jacket. I needed something that would fit over the top of my other layers when things were really cold (think Rainier on summit day or belaying in Ouray). It has exceeded my expectations. It’s really warm, and easily fits over my action suit. The hood fits over my helmet but has good adjustments to bring it down when I’m not wearing one. The sleeves are too puffy for gauntlets to fit over, but they easily slide over big gloves, which was the idea. I am 6’2” and weigh about 180 lbs. and I got an XL so that it would be a little oversized. Even at that, I can still use it as a stand alone piece. It’s a bit heavy, weighing in at 26.7 ounces, but it compresses well and stuffs easily into my pack, and I can use a small stuff sack when I need to. It’s very wind-proof and kept me toasty when I was in a blow where gusts topped 70mph (according to the weather station at the ski resort over the ridge). The only problem I have had is that my wife steals it on cold mornings!

Pretty good as apparel, less good as equipment

This coat is OK for a city coat but it's not really a proper piece of outdoor gear. The cut is generous, one might even say urban. Big wins for me are the tooth zipper on the front and the adjustable hood--both features are missing from most/all other similar coats in this price range or a bit higher. Interior stash pocket(s) would be nice. The two main weaknesses in terms of performance are that it's very heavy/bulky and the cuffs are not serious. They have no adjustment and are sort of bloused over an elastic opening. They're basically incompatible with gauntlet-style gloves or mitts. Totally fine for commutuing/around town/non-techinical uses, and the wide baffles are nice. Sure, a throwback style that's having a moment, but they're also just puffier. I got this to replace a mid-90s vintage original Marmot Guide down sweater that has just about had it--the down is beat and the coil zips on the pockets are failing. But at 30 years in service it's tough to complain. I hope this one will last a long time, though I will use it for less demanding applications.

Not a bad light coat

This jacket is irresistibly comfortable and surprisingly lightweight. It definitely does the job of keeping you warm in moderately cold weather and it looks pretty decent on as well. Overall I really like it.

Warmth Meets Durability

Excellent insulation for cold weather with a rugged build. Comfortable fit and great for outdoor adventures, though slightly bulky for casual wear.

Amazing

Super duper warm and I love that it’s so lightweight. The color is really pretty and the hoodie makes everything so much easier. The best thing about it being lightweight is that I can travel with it and even pack it in my suitcase without it being too bulky.
