Runs very small

It’s a beautiful dress, appears to be nice quality for the price, and I was so hoping it would work out. But it runs very small. I’m a size 14, and I bought an XL. It didn’t come close to closing. At least a 6” gap between where the zipper should meet. Had to return it.
