Using Lancome mascaras for a very long time

I recently bought a Lancome Idole mascara, based on many of the reviews. First, I find the curved wand too awkward to do a good job of applying. More often than not, I get some part of it on my eyelid, and I have been using mascara for many decades, so not a newcomer. I prefer the straight wand. Second, once I manage to get it on it tends to clump on my lashes close to the base of my eyelid, and also at other points of my lashes. I have found flaking below my eyes hours later after applying. I have gone back to my old stand by, Definicils, applying Cils Booster first. (I tried Cils Booster with the Lancome Idole and without it.) Without was slightly less clumpy. In addition, Lancome Idole seems to irritate my eyes. Definicils does not.
