Ratings & Reviews

Here's what customers think
  • The lens is praised for its exceptional image quality, including sharpness, color, and bokeh.
  • It is considered one of the best zoom lenses available, capable of producing results comparable to prime lenses.
  • However, the lens is also noted for being extremely heavy and bulky, which can make it impractical for extended handheld use or travel.
  • While the weight and size are drawbacks, the lens is seen as a valuable tool for professional photographers, particularly those shooting in low-light conditions where the versatility and performance are essential.

Fatty, BUT Amazing!

I bought this lens in 2024. I have small hands, but I manage to handle it ok. It is on the heavier side, but the photos it produces are excellent! It is a great portrait lens, but Landscape shots are amazing! I would say GO TO A STORE so you can get a feel for it before purchasing. It's a fatty!! I considered sending it back, but I love the quality shots too much to do so. For a man, the size probably wouldn't bother you too much.

Prime in a zoom

Most will complain about how heavy it is and I think that depends on who's using it. I knew buying this lens that it would have some weight to it, especially if I plan on using it for long photographing session. The f/2 aperture of this lens paired with my R6 M III allows me to shoot in low light situations without having to crank up my ISO.

F2 sharpness worth the weight and control tradeoffs

Confirming what has already been said elsewhere. I'm using this lens paired with a R1 for mostly indoor sports photography (low-angle, under-the-net basketball shots). Lens is somewhat heavy, but not unexpected. Mass of lens doesn't throw off the center of balance significantly when paired with R1. Lens isn't overly heavy-- actively holding and zooming the lens for hours isn't a problem. For zooming, one would prefer the focus and zoom rings positions be swapped; however, the configuration is sufficient as is. Also, one would want to adjust the resistance on the zoom ring; however, the single built-in resistance is a decent balance between rapid and fine adjustments. The F2 is a world of difference between F2.8 and F4, particularly given the poor and high-contrast lighting conditions where I mostly use the lens.

Incredible lens, but impractical.

I applaud Canon for making this wild lens - I've never seen a normal zoom with an f/2 and the output has a prime quality in terms of subject isolation. Excellent color and sharpness for a zoom, though not quite prime level. The weight and sheer mass of this lens, however, negates its utility as a normal zoom for walk-around. It's difficult and awkward to hand hold due to the width and the front element is positively monstrous. The weight is very unbalanced on an R5, which has far too small a grip and form factor. As with a telephoto, you are primarily holding the lens and the body is secondary. I still love that Canon makes these outrageous lenses that no one else will make. For those who don't really care about size/weight - this is a great option.

Fatal flaw: horrible ergonomics for handholding

Fatal flaw with this lens is the zoom ring is so narrow and set back so it's very hard to handhold and zoom. Ergonomically it's awful to handhold given the weight. Incredibly smooth bokeh and image quality. However, given the size and weight of this lens, I wish they would make more compromises in IQ to achieve a lighter, more versatile 2.0 zoom.
