Weird sizing

The size chart for this (2-16) does not match the way it is sized (s,m,l). I am a 12/14 and ordered large. It fit okay through shoulders but was huge otherwise. I was so uncertain what size to exchange for that I returned it. This is a beautifully made gown but not sure about the cut. If you are apple shaped this dress might be a good option as it would minimize that.
