Now a #1 New York Times bestseller! A touching and lyrical tale about a remarkable sea otter, from Newbery Medalist Katherine Applegate, author of Wishtree. Meet Odder, the Queen of Play: Nobody has her moves. She doesn’t just swim to the bottom, she dive-bombs. She doesn’t just somersault, she triple-doughnuts. She doesn’t just ride the waves, she makes them. Odder spends her days off the coast of central California, practicing her underwater acrobatics and spinning the quirky stories for which she’s known. She’s a fearless daredevil, curious to a fault. But when Odder comes face-to-face with a hungry great white shark, her life takes a dramatic turn, one that will challenge everything she believes about herself—and about the humans who hope to save her. Inspired by the true story of a Monterey Bay Aquarium program that pairs orphaned otter pups with surrogate mothers, this poignant and humorous tale told in free verse examines bravery and healing through the eyes of one of nature’s most beloved and charming animals.

A super sweet story!

Odder by Katherine Applegate is the lyrical tale of an endangered sea otter named Odder who was raised in captivity at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Based on a true story. From the author of The One and Only Ivan. This was a super sweet story told in verse from Odder's pov as she grows from a pup with a surrogate sea otter mother to a mother herself. I read this twice, once on my own and once with my 8yo. She adored the illustrations and the pups!

Another Applegate Classic

Applegate's books are always lovely and this is no exception. Told in free verse, it is a sad, yet hopeful tale of a sea otter rescued, rehabbed and rescued again in Monterey Bay. It is an educational story based on historical events told from the POV of the otter. Reluctant readers will appreciate how easy it is to read, and everyone will love the cute illustrations.

Cute story

This was a very cute story from an otter’s PIV. Not sure I’m loving the format(poem)… but nonetheless the story was great. Still my favorite…. CRENSHAW. Happy Reading:) **I tried to review on goodreads but for some reason it wouldn’t let me**

Rare, powerful magic here!

Odder dives inside the world of sea otters, and inside the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s remarkable mission to protect them. Odder is a page turner, with joy, humor, realism, and a crafty number of details. The story is in verse, which (over and over) captures essentials with phenomenal brevity and clarity. Understanding unseen, beautiful parts of our world is a joy that helps ensure their future. Children can read Odder themselves, but sharing as a read-aloud improves a superb book with togetherness. As always, the best children’s books speak to adults. Irresistible, playful, and illuminating, Odder is a feast that feels like dessert.

Sweet and charming

Inspired by the real life Monterey Bay Aquarium program that partners orphaned otter pups with surrogate mothers, Odder is a humorous free verse tale told through the eyes of the Queen of Play. Odder has spent most of her life off the coast of central California. Until one day she has a brutal encounter with a shark that leads her to the aquarium. While there, she is reunited with her friend and the two start an incredible journey of fostering other otter pups. Sweet, lyrical, and charming, Odder is a beautiful story of loss and hope. I loved how much non-fiction information was woven into the writing. Katherine Applegate did a wonderful job balancing a lovable character with learning about otters, ocean life, rescue and rehabilitation, and so much more. The style of writing made this a book that is easily accessible for most readers, and could be read quickly or broken in to small sections. All in all, I loved it and can't wait to share it with my kids. Beautiful story and very well-written. *Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
