In this riveting novel, two boys discover the true meaning of family and the sacrifices it requires. Two-time Newbery Honor winner Gary D. Schmidt delivers the shattering story of Joseph, a father at thirteen, who has never seen his daughter, Jupiter. After spending time in a juvenile facility, he's placed with a foster family on a farm in rural Maine. Here Joseph, damaged and withdrawn, meets twelve-year-old Jack, who narrates the account of the troubled, passionate teen who wants to find his baby at any cost. When Jack meets his new foster brother, he knows three things about him- Joseph almost killed a teacher. He was incarcerated at a place called Stone Mountain. He has a daughter. Her name is Jupiter. And he has never seen her. What Jack doesn't know, at first, is how desperate Joseph is to find his baby girl. Or how urgently he, Jack, will want to help. But the past can't be shaken off. Even as new bonds form, old wounds reopen. The search for Jupiter demands more from Jack than he can imagine. This tender, heartbreaking novel is Gary D. Schmidt at his best. He is the author of the Printz Honor and Newbery Honor Book Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy, Okay for Now, a National Book Award finalist, and The Wednesday Wars, a Newbery Honor Book, among his many acclaimed novels for young readers.

Made me cry six times

My English teacher recommended this book to me and wow, I loved it. It was super emotional and very well written. This book ripped out my heart, chewed it up, spit it out, threw it down a sewer, called it names, then laughed. 10/10 would recommend, especially if you like heart wrenching books.

Good book with a bit of an abrupt ending

Orbiting Jupiter by Gary D. Schmidt was an amazing book with plenty of unexpected plot twists. Orbiting Jupiter is a realistic fiction book written in 2015 centering around the theme of family, however unconventional it may be. When I first saw the title of this book, I was completely unaware of what to expect. Throughout the novel, however, the true meaning of the title uncovered new story lines and new characters. These new plots and new perspectives really helped to shape this book into the amazing novel that it is. This novel dealt with some heavy topics such as foster care, unfit parents and teen parenting (or should I say the lack thereof). While capturing the essence of these hard subjects, this story was told in the narrative of a sixth grade boy, Jack, who learned about loss, friendship, love, and tragedy all in a short amount of time. Gary D. Schmidt did an amazing job of reflecting on the reality of our world and telling the story of a young boy who has faced adversity in a multitude of ways. From being a foster child to being misunderstood and having a child he is desperate to find, Joseph overcomes many obstacles throughout the story. Gary D. Schmidt is a well-known author also known for his bestseller, The Wednesday Wars. Although Orbiting Jupiter came out in 2015, these issues are still a major thing today. Schmidt did an excellent job at writing a novel that brought awareness to very big problems and helped young adults understand and comprehend them. I truly enjoyed reading this novel and appreciated learning more about foster care as well as custody rules and family in general. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a short read and wants to learn more about issues in our society. I do, however, only recommend this book to those that are mature enough to handle real world situations portrayed in a very serious way. Orbiting Jupiter was one of my favorite books. What started out as a book I wasn’t sure if I wanted to pick up quickly became one that I couldn’t put down. With all of the unexpected twists and hidden details that came out to the audience throughout the book, Orbiting Jupiter is a well-written, entertaining book. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who enjoys reading and even people who may not.
