The launch of the Sterling Signature Classics program. Sterling will roll out six new Signature Classics each season. When handsome young Dorian Gray sees a painter's stunning portrait of him, he is transfixed by its reflection of his own beauty. He is also troubled by the knowledge that the image in the painting will remain forever youthful and handsome while he himself grows older and less desirable. He wishes aloud that the roles were reversed, saying that he would give his soul if only the painting would suffer the ravages of time and he were to remain forever young. From that point on, Dorian lives a life of hedonistic indulgence, knowing that only the painting will show his moral corruption.

Confused???

I purchased this book a few weeks ago, began to read it today and found that it skips from page 28 to 61. I have two entire chapters and the end of the second chapter missing. The pages begin again at chapter 5.

Truly Spectacular

This was truly a spectacular book. Oscar Wilde implores the reader in the foreword not to try to find meaning in books, but let me tell, every page simply oozes meaning. Wilde paints a "picture" (no pun intended) of the nature of humanity, youth and aging, good and evil, purity and sin. It's such an inspiring and thought-provoking treatise on the answer to the question "what if I could do whatever I wanted in life and never suffer the consequences?" He so masterfully captures the corruption of the human soul. As one of the classics, I think that this is a necessary read for anyone who wants to be truly well-read. I love how Wilde so masterfully exposes the human psyche and darker nature. It leaves one thinking a lot about one's own life and pursuits and the dangers of giving into unrestrained hedonism. With that said, it is a pretty dark novel. This is not a spoiler review, so I won't go into details. I highly recommend this book!

A wonderful edition of one of my favorite classics

I bought the paperback version of this book and I think the construction of the book is very high quality considering it the book costs $10. However, I removed a star because the paperback version has a completely different cover than what is pictured.

A true classic

I always wanted to read this book and I'm really glad I finally did. It is a great story about youth, age, beauty and how we perceive all of it. Although it was written at the end of the 19th century it has timeless message. Thanks.

The Signature Dorian Gray

As a bookseller, I am very excited about our new Signature Classic Editions. When we received Pride and Prejudice at New Hope, I was struck by the beauty of the cover art, both inside and out, the texture of the cover, even the interior book flaps that make it seem more substantial than a mere paperback. Imagine my astonishment and joy when I discovered this was my introduction to our revamped classic editions that I had heard rumours about...despite the fact that (confessional tone here), I am not a big fan of Pride and Prejudice. I am, however, a big fan of The Picture of Dorian Gray. While I could discuss how the Art-Deco style cover in sombre tones fits the story nicely, I do indeed appreciate a book mostly for the writing contained within its pages, no matter the presentation of its externalities. What I love about this novel is that it has so much for every reader: tragedy, romance, humor, hope, ambition, fear, suspicion, true love, and so much wit I would not be shocked to find the original manuscript came with a shoehorn in order to fit it all in. Yet it is at its heart a Gothic tale, set amid the backdrop of luxurious fin-de-siècle idle aristocracy. So much of the story is cast in the bright sunlight of lazy afternoons in which the greatest danger seems to be ennui. It is easy- pleasant, even - to place ourselves in the body of Mr. Dorian himself, and to wonder if we would have made different choices from the ones he did from moment to moment. Having reflected on these, it is easy also to fear that, given the circumstances, the reader himself/herself may have become more monstrous and vile indeed. If you feel you are perhaps in English class - good! Reading classics is not for sissies, and good literature should challenge you. So, if you want to dive into literature, check out our classic editions. They’re gorgeous books at a great price, plus the collection is a great guide for all the “must reads” from the last twenty centuries or so. I highly recommend them. I may be a little biased, but I do not think that I am wrong.
