This enlightening illustrated narrative by the world's most celebrated astrophysicist explains the universe from the solar system to the farthest reaches of space with authority and humor. No one can make the mysteries of the universe more comprehensible and fun than Neil deGrasse Tyson. Drawing on mythology, history, and literature alongside his trademark wit and charm Tyson and Star Talk senior producer Lindsey Nyx Walker bring planetary science down to Earth and principles of astrophysics within reach. In this entertaining book, illustrated with vivid photographs and art, readers travel through space and time, starting with the Big Bang and voyaging to the far reaches of the universe and beyond. Along the way, science greets pop culture as Tyson explains the triumphs and bloopers in Hollywood's blockbusters- all part of an entertaining ride through the cosmos. The book begins as we leave Earth, encountering new truths about our planet's atmosphere, the nature of sunlight, and the many missions that have demystified our galactic neighbors. But the farther out we travel, the weirder things get. What's a void and what's a vacuum? How can light be a wave and a particle at the same time? When we finally arrive in the blackness of outer space, Tyson takes on the spookiest phenomena of the cosmos- parallel worlds, black holes, time travel, and more.

Calling all Science Nerds and Beyond!

“Statistical analysis of the mission data showed that not only do planets outnumber stars in our galaxy, but also that the Milky Way might harbor around 300 million Earthlike worlds within a habitable zone. Astrobiologists think at least one of these exo-Earths may very well reside within a mere 20 light-years from us, awaiting detection.” So, I remember when I was approximately 10 years old asking my parents to purchase a telescope. My interest in the night sky at the time coincided with Greek mythology and the following weekly television series Star Trek, Lost in Space, and the Time Tunnel. To my delight, they surprised me with a reflecting telescope via leftover S & H green stamps. From that moment on I kept meticulous records of the sunspot's journey across its surface and utilized a National Geographic Map of the moon to explore the impact craters, crevices, seas, and furrows. To Infinity and Beyond A Journey of Cosmic Discovery is my third Neil deGrasse Tyson book co-authored by Lindsey Nyx Walker. This narrative takes its readers on an engaging journey through the universe, from our solar system to the further expanses of space. As we embark on this journey of the mind and body, the DNA of this book tracks from his podcast, that is called StarTalk, which is a mixture of science, pop culture, and humor. You can’t fake passion, and Tyson has it in spades. When he defines the various principles of space, you can tell he’s truly fascinated by the topic. He wants his readers to be as excited as he is, which makes his enthusiasm contagious. To explain the concept of Black Holes, Tyson put it this way: “The region of space where the matter has condensed to such a high density, and the surface gravity is so high that you cannot escape it, even at the speed of light. You are forever trapped. It is the human version of the roach motel. You check in, but you don’t check out.” This analogy is relatable and easy to understand but doesn’t sacrifice the accuracy of the information. With his wit and humor, he manages to find a balance between simplifying material without making it overly simplistic. By now you can probably guess that I am a science nerd, but you don’t need to be one to thoroughly enjoy this book as I did. So, 5-star rating and beyond!

Good read for anyone!

I am a huge Star Talk fan and love Neil DeGrasse Tyson and despite listening to many hours of his interviews and presentations, there was still quite a bit of material in here that I forgot or don't remember hearing. The book is easy to read and understand while still being written at a level that doesn't insult your intelligence. The topics are explained well, there are great pictures and for an ADD reader like me, it was good to have side tangents/topics that were explored briefly in the midst of discussing topics that needed a deeper dive. There are references to pop culture, history, science and much more! Highly recommend for Star Talk fans or anyone who is curious no matter how old or young you are!!
