The north face backpacks are the absolute best. My son carried one to school for 5 years and it held up no scratch no tear out handles even though it's always heavy with books / labtop etc. This year I am treating him to a new bag not because the first one is in bad condition but because I think it has done its time. I bought him the same bag in a different color. I am expecting the same result. The north face is really built to last

Okay student bag
I have been using this backpack for a couple of months for high-school. It is pretty good and I like the backpack appearance and how it distributes the weight of many binders, notebooks, and textbooks. The front mesh is so useful for quick-access items like a hat, keys, brochures, etc.. I haven't utilized the daisy chain system yet, but I heard that you could attach bungees to behave similarly to the Borealis backpack, where you can stuff extra clothes or other items. However, you do have to pack smart (and less) due to the backpack's slim profile. When you have lots of books/notebooks/folders/binders, everything is stressed and gets squished pretty easily (which increases the difficulty in taking in or out school items). This backpack would be perfect for students attending schools that have lockers, or if you just pack less in general. Additionally, you have to keep in mind that the backpack is very prone to fall over when you set it to stand vertically (unless there is a lot of space taken up) due to the slim profile. There are some things I wish the backpack could be improved on: PLEASE ADD strap loops on all of the straps (it gets messy and confusing), improve zipper quality (the zippers are decent, but compared to other bags in this price range, it feels cheap), ADD A FALSE BOTTOM for the laptop compartment,

The strap padding is really thin and hurts my shoulders
I got the recon backpack in hopes to use it for my trip but the straps are hard and the padding is very thin. The movement around my arm is limited and the straps are rigid.

Quality Decline
I am replacing my Recon from abt 20 years ago. This bag is worse quality in many ways. - fabric is cheaper, thinner - straps and back have less padding - stitching and zippers not as good

Would buy again
Really good bag, I've had it for about 4 years. I use it for school which it works great for. Used it for some roadtrips, which it was a little small for some but still worth it. No big tears or damage other that a small hole in the front mesh pocket. Would recommend and would buy again.

Excellent backpack, versatile and hard wearing
I requested this as a gift a few years back after doing a lot of research into various backpacks and I have not been disappointed. I primarily use it as my bag to and fro work/my GHB but have also used it while traveling as my personal item. The big win for me was its water bottle sleeves on the side hold a 32 oz Nalgene PERFECTLY with enough stretch to accomodate it but little enough to hold it snuggly. Also the waterbottle sleeves coming up as high as they do is clutch, my last backpack had a short little bottle cubby and my Nalgene was constantly tipping out. Love the zipper pulls (a lot, please don't change them), love the sternum strap, the materials have held up well over 3 years of me lugging it back and forth 5 days a week, the laptop sleeve is very nice if you need one, the main compartment is spacious and holds a surprising amount of stuff, and the Recon is just very comfortable to wear and carry. The handle at the top of the bag has held up well and is comfortable to grab (small things build to big satisfaction). About my only critique (if you want to call it that) is the secondary compartment with all the little compartments for pens, pocket knife, keys, sunglasses, slash whatever floats your boat to put in them is a bit busy for my taste. I'd prefer a streamlined compartment with maybe one or two zippered compartments or nooks, but that's just personal preference.
