Wheels Failed First Trip

The wheels failed on the first trip to Europe (for a month!) They were bent the monument I pick my bag up at the airport in Rome and continued to get worse until they finally would not roll at all. My wife’s did the same thing. I took them in for warranty repair on returning and the wheels axles were replaced in a week but I am hesitant to use them in our next journey. We have had Eagle Creek rolling soft suitcases for almost 17 years and never an issue. Just wanted to upgrade. Just not the same quality as they used to be.

Well made. Larger than really desired.

Very well made. Light. Spacious. My only “wish” is that it were a bit smaller. This suitcase replaced a long-used (and -loved) 26” case by the now-defunct EBags. A 26” case is what I wanted and need; but it is almost impossible to find a well-made 26” bag! I wish Eagle Creek made the Expanse 2-wheel bag in a 26” size.

Quality concerns

the wheels do not roll well. I've used Eagle Creek bags for over 10 years and this is the first bag that does not have quality wheels. I bought a 2-wheel for use on non-smooth surfaces and this one has to be dragged as the wheels do not turn as expected.

Beware of the color you choose

Love our Eagle Creek luggage especially with all of its zippered storage pockets but…Just a warning to anyone purchasing any bag in a light color (such as the yellow, khaki or green). My husband wanted the lighter color and even though I warned him about it showing the dirt he insisted. One direct round trip to Ireland and his bag came back off the plane(s) filthy! The airlines and airport baggage carousels don’t care how they treat passengers luggage. Needless to say, he didn’t want to use it anymore because of the way it looked. FYI…I ended up finding a laundry bar soap called Zote figuring what do I have to lose trying to restore it. Scrubbed it with a stiff brush and the soap several times, air drying it in the sun and it looks as good as new. Now he’ll only use it for car traveling (too big for carry-on) as one time on a plane and it will be filthy again.

Family bag

We bought this bag to make packing the car/flying/taking the train easier with our family of 5 (3 young children). We have successfully used this single bag for clothing for all 5 of us (in EC packing cubes) on three 2-5 night trips. The extender was great to give a little extra room on the way home and it held up nicely on the train and metro and carting it a mile from the station to our hotel in the driving rain. I’d highly recommend this bag if it’s space and durability you’re looking for.

Major disappointment!

The Expanse seems to have been designed by someone who doesn’t travel very often. I chose this bag to replace a Tarmac, which was a very good piece of luggage. Great design and thoughtful layout. However, the Expanse bag is a very poor substitute for the Tarmac, especially for someone like me who makes 6-8 international trips per year. The Expanse is not designed well, has a poor layout, and cheaply made. It lacks usable storage pockets on the front cover, lacks the mesh pockets on the wall of the interior and lacks sturdiness. It definitely isn’t the same quality as the Tarmac bags which are no longer being produced by Eagle Creek.

Just what I needed

works well, and keeps its form well. Also easy to transport even with 45ish pounds in it.
