Very Convenient but Not Inexpensive

Owned 4 months, this Opal ice maker has worked well. If you are considering one, buy it for the convenience of having ice handy and in a very useful form: the small cubes cool drinks quickly and eliminate the need to deal with ice trays, store bought bags or in-door refrigerator ice makers with limited lifespans. Most users won't save money vs. store bought ice. My technique: fill the reservoir with distilled water (tap water allows mineral residue to build up, requiring a special cleaning routine), run the ice maker for 2 to 3 hours, scoop the cubes into plastic sandwich bags and freeze them. (The cubes will freeze together, but 1 or 2 sharp raps against the kitchen counter breaks them apart for good.) Drain the Opal until next use. Noise level after startup (3 or 4 minutes) is quiet: low enough to converse with the Opal a few inches away without raising your voice.

It's More Than Ice. It's a Lifeline!

I have used the GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker for nearly 5 years now, and I couldn't be happier. I have also given them as gifts and quickly became the family favorite. I didn't realize how much I needed this ice maker until I had one. Now I can't imagine my life without it. It is by far my favorite appliance in the house. Keeping it clean, sanitized, and descaled is the key to keeping it in great working order. I only clean it with Opal products (descaling powder, cleaning solution, and scale inhibiting filters). Additionally, I use distilled water to keep my unit running in tip-top-shape and my ice tasty. The capacity of produced ice is amazing - 1lb an hour of ice is enough to last throughout the day. I have connected my Opal to the SmartHQ app and it allows me to monitor my machine and alerts me when it is time to maintain the unit. I would 100% recommend this product to anyone who is on the fence. It is worth the price and will keep you going in either the dead of winter or in the middle of summer.

Very loud

Started making this horrible screeching noise, no matter what I do weather its descaling it, completely cleaning it, or turning it off, its won't stop. Have had it since Christmas and it wakes my daughter up at night. There is no fix for this, and it is going in the trash in the near future if I can't figure it out.

I love my ice maker! My husband got it for me for Christmas and it’s everything I imagined it to be! Tons of fresh chewy ice and constantly making more. I’m so happy with how well it works and how pretty it is! I got the color sandstone.

Easy setup!

Love it. Just got it installed today, 1-17-26. Easy to follow instructions. The only thing I would change is putting instructions on how install the filter with the initial setup. I had everything set up and the basin was half full of ice before I realized the filter should’ve been installed. All in all, pleased with the result!
