Fragrance perfection awaits
Find your new favorite fragrance in seconds
Take our fragrance finder quiz to find out! It creates unique recommendations pulling from a large database of perfumes and colognes. The quiz takes into account several factors which include: fragrances you already like, your preferred scent family, how you'd like your perfume or cologne to make you feel, and whether you prefer a feminine or masculine scent. All of this is used to determine which fragrance you should wear.
The fragrance finder quiz saves you the hassle of learning the science behind fragrances, but here's a quick overview if you're curious about the basics. Fragrances are typically classified as perfume or cologne. The difference being the concentration of essential oils. Colognes typically have lower concentrations, while perfumes have higher concentrations. Masculine fragrances tend to work well with the typically sharp and musky body odor of males. If you're interested in a masculine scent you can check our gift sets for men. Feminine fragrances tend to work well with the typically soft and ambery body odor of females. If you want a more feminine fragrance browse our gifts sets for women. The scents within a fragrance belong to one of four scent families: fresh (or nautical), floral, woody, or amber. The scents are further divided into the notes of the fragrance. These are top notes, middle (heart) notes, and base (bottom) notes. When you wear a cologne or perfume the scent changes as time passes. Top notes fade first leaving the middle notes, and then base notes to linger.
1. Fragrance database.
To provide our users with a completest overview of fragrances, we have collaborated with Fragrances of the World, the largest independent guide to fragrance classification. First published in 1984 by Michael Edwards, it is the most comprehensive and qualitative “bible of perfumes” that exists today. Michael Edwards and his team have historic information and evaluate every single product appearing on the market and classify it.
2. Perfumistic point of view: our entries are “expert reviewed”
Perfumers are at the heart of our project, responsible for both the logic of recommendation and the visualization of each individual perfume. How do we do it? Each perfume is at least calibrated by a perfumery expert. Furthermore, we rigorously review the most popular scents to check accuracy of recommendations and make sure algorythms are precise. In many cases we use technology (like a chromatograph) to contrast the experts opinion. “Expert reviewed¨ means one of our perfumers evaluators has reviewed the scent profile and olfactive family classification. We review the perfumes systematically in order to ensure the classification and description is accurate based on objective and perfumery criteria. It is an independent professional review.
3. Visualisation of the perfume.
We developed an innovative way to visualize fragrances so that our users can figure out how the perfumes smell before having access to a sample. The quadrification, the image representing a composition of the ingredients, is created by our algorithm using the information obtained during perfumery review.
The size of each ingredient image is not based on real proportion of each ingredient in the formula that is secret and corresponds rather to the perception of its intensity in a perfume (PERFUME NOTES). Stronger ones have black background whereas fresher ones have white background.
Thanks to the innovative quadrification algorithm, you can compare several perfumes. However, please mind that quality of the ingredients and concentration of the perfume (EDP, EDT, EDC) may vary and therefore impact the perception of the perfume, although by visualization they might be similar.
4. Olfactive profile
The algorithm creates an olfactive profile analyzing the aggregated information of user´s favourite perfumes and making conclusions with the objective to help user understand their olfactive families and ingredients preferences.
The selection of favorite fragrances is necessary for informative and educational purposes only in order to enable the user to identify his olfactory preferences, and not to propose substitute.
5. Recommendation algorithms.
To reference the fragrances to the user based on their olfactive profile, we use the algorithm that compares all the fragrances from the database using the data of the composition and perfumery analysis of the ingredients perception that makes important only the notes that a consumer can perceive.
We also have at our disposal an extensive thesaurus of all the verbal associations they use themselves to describe olfactive families, ingredients, nuances and intensities, powered by a neuroscience project from MindSpeller that finds consumers language associated with those perfumistic words.
Our algorithm is co-created and tested by perfumers, mathematicians, software engineers and is totally independent and doesn´t put in favour any brands.
Describe the methods used for referencing the Fragrance (by brand, ideas, name, “ingredients”, etc.); with a clear definition of each criteria – notably by “ideas” and by “ingredients” that are more sensitive; Podéis ampliar lo que teníais:
What about the search by Concepts?. Is this objective? Yes as much as language permits. First it is independent so it does not favor any brand nor picks up “marketing jargon”. Second, perfumers have worked intensely to list all the words associations they use themselves to describe olfactive families, ingredients, nuances and intensities. And lastly, we have linked this work with a neuroscience project from MindSpeller that finds consumers language associated with those perfumistic words. We think it is as potent as it gets to help us understand what you are looking for.
6. Users reviews and ratings
Do users have a say? We gather user ratings that are published once they reach critical mass to give a representative point of view. However, we are selective in that we only look for feedback of those who actually like a particular olfactive family. What you are looking for is to know what a “floral lover” thinks of the latest floral launch. Right?
7. Recommendations only concern products sold by MACY’S.
8. A warning as to the reliability of the comparison based on fragrance scents which are not “exact science”: the fact that quality of the ingredients may vary and therefore impact differently each perfume, as well as the possible differences of perception from one user to another. In this regard, we believe that the points raised in the draft Q&A “Is the Visualization really objective to the way it smells” could be integrated in the Terms of Use
9. If any, the existence of paid advertising, its conditions and its influence on the ranking.
