Since its creation in 1921, N°5 has exuded the very essence of femininity: An abstract, mysterious scent, alive with countless subtle facets, radiating an extravagant floral richness. In 1986, Jacques Polge, reinterpreted his predecessor Ernest Beaux's composition to create a fuller, more voluminous version of the now and forever women's fragrance: the Eau de Parfum.

I bought this for my mom who will soon be 93. It’s the only thing she will wear. The clerk was so friendly and helpful.

    Beautiful scent

This is an iconic scent. Every time I wear it I get a lot of compliments. It is not too strong but subtle enough to last almost all day. It has a subtle floral scent. Great for special occasion.

I was disappointed in the weak smell of the product. It doesn’t seem to linger at all. I can hardly tell what it smells like. I assume it is old.

    Missing the authentic

So I'm one of those people who bought this as a teenager and wore it religiously--yes, decades ago. I've been researching contemporary perfumes for an article and have learned much about the industry: certain ingredients banned for various reasons, the cheapening of other ingredients for economic reasons, and the general need for companies to keep things fresh and new by reinventing the old. In the case of Chanel No. 5, this is a travesty. The original formula is only a ghost in this bottle. Heartbreak. The characteristic complex sillage, lost. A plea: bring back the one and only No. 5 from the estates of the grande dames of lore, the young and hopeful of nostalgia, the glamorous from times gone. Any way you can formulate it, do it.
