Welcome to Derry, Maine. It's a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made twenty-eight years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city's children. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that terrifying summer return as they prepare to once again battle the monster lurking in Derry's sewers. A Coming-of-Age Story

Stephen King’s It is a massive, ambitious novel that blends supernatural horror with the deep emotional resonance of a coming-of-age story—and for me, it was the latter that really made it shine. I listened to the audiobook as I read along, and Steven Weber’s narration is phenomenal. He gives each character a distinct voice, and his pacing grows more frenetic as the tension builds, adding a whole extra layer of immersion to the experience. The childhood storyline of the Losers’ Club was easily the highlight. I loved the closeness between the kids and how they rallied around each other in the face of fear, bullies, and literal evil. Bill worked well as the leader, though his stutter occasionally felt a little overdone. Richie’s comic relief—especially his barrage of voices—was more irritating than endearing to me, and honestly hasn’t aged all that well. Ben, on the other hand, was probably my favorite. His quiet loyalty, his heartbreak over Bev, and his underlying strength made him the heart of the group in many ways. I didn’t find Pennywise or the supernatural horror particularly scary, but I don’t think that took anything away from the story. The real horror is what the kids go through emotionally—loss, trauma, and growing up too fast. I was less drawn to the adult storyline, maybe because the characters were working through suppressed memories for so long, and the momentum dipped a bit there. As for that scene—it’s infamous for a reason. I won’t go into detail, but I will say it was handled more delicately than I expected, even if I still found it uncomfortable and unnecessary. Honestly, it can be skipped without losing any key plot points or emotional impact. Overall, It is a powerful story about memory, fear, and friendship. It wasn’t perfect, but I really enjoyed the journey. Solid 4 out of 5 stars.

Amazing

I’m a huge fan of him and I watched both rye original and remakes for IT and I cannot wait for Welcome to Derry to come out. IT is my favorite written by King and I was so surprised when I saw that he played him IT Chapter Two

A Game-Changer in the Genre

Had King not been so severely under the influence at the time that he was writing this, I imagine it would have turned out as a more polished, cohesive reading experience. But even with its many faults, quirks and the author's flat-out insane choices throughout the text, I still think it's one of the more admirably ambitious and impressive books by an American horror writer. King's detailed construction of Derry as if it is a real New England town––down to its morally dubious history and even its sewer system––makes the problems of its inhabitants feel so much more urgent, monster or no monster. Pennywise is an overarching antagonist, a "Big Bad," but it's the many irresponsible, bigoted, abusive, very true-to-life adult characters in the 1950s storyline from whom the story's true concept of evil is exquisitely drawn.

King at his very best... almost

This is a must read for any fan of horror and on the Mount Rushmore of Kings greatest. I said almost in the title, only because I think Salems Lot is Kings BEST. IT will forever be on my shelf, ready to re enjoy at a moments notice.

Incredible, complex, and deep

My favorite of Stephen Kings. The book offers so much to consume. Surface level horror, cosmological storytelling, and a deep, multiverse with many other horrors you'll only ever know about if you're a big fan of this author. I keep coming back, re-reading chapters, I'm terrified, saddened, and hopeful throughout this book in every chapter. It grabs you; and much like IT in this story, it consumes you.

Recommended

I bought this book in July/August 2023 and just got done reading this today. It's a big book but totally worth the read! I went on the roller coaster of feelings between heartwarming moments and total fear. At some points, I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation of what's next, but the message at the end was conveyed beautifully!!!! Please take the the time to read it is worth it!
