Check-In Luggage

You’ve made it work for years with a hodgepodge of backpacks, duffels and carry-ons, but you’re ready to retreat from the battle for overhead bin space. What kind of check-in luggage do you need? At Macy’s, you’ll find a great solution, whether you’re planning a dream vacation or just want to upgrade for business travel.

Check-In Luggage: How Big is Too Big?

Most airlines limit checked bags to 50 pounds, though sometimes it can be lower, so remember to check before you pack. If you travel a lot and are often pushing the limits, invest in check-in luggage with built-in scales. Samsonite check-in luggage and other brands offer several such models, as well as standalone luggage scales with tape measures. There also are size limits, measured in linear inches. You can calculate your bag’s linear inches by adding suitcase exterior length, width, and height, including wheels and handles. Most airlines limit bags to 62 linear inches but, it can vary.

Soft or Hard Check-In Luggage?

Softside luggage tends to be lighter and flexible. That means easier storage between trips, plus lightweight luggage helps you stay under airline weight limits. Hardside luggage offers great protection for contents and is very durable. Bags with textured exteriors and shock-absorbing corner protectors are in it for the long haul. Delsey check-in luggage is one example with durable (and stylish!) hard and soft options.

Large Checked Luggage: The Family Plan

Unfortunately, airline checked-bag fees tend to climb per bag with each added suitcase. There might be a workaround, though, if you’re traveling with a close friend or family. Thanks to the advent of packing cubes, it’s easy to separate people’s clothing inside one larger suitcase. Consider packing what you can into compact, carry-on underseat luggage and everyone is good to go.
