I'm going to be honest... (shocker, I know) I was incredibly hesitant about this book when I first started it. When it comes to JLA's books, they are very hit or miss. Some are incredible and some I could do without. Entangled Publishing reached out to me and asked me to join a read along in the days leading up to the rerelease of Obsidian. Naturally, I couldn't say no! (I will also preface with the fact that I do own/have read SEVERAL of JLA's books, so I went in with an understanding of how she writes and what to expect.) This book is YA, but do not let that discourage you from reading it. The story takes place in a small town where everything ordinary is anything but. Our main characters, much like in the Twilight Saga, are high schoolers. For the older audience, I ask that you don't automatically turn your nose up to it. Obsidian is the perfect balance of angst and paranormal romance with basically no spice. Super quick, fun, mindless read! As a big-time Twi-hard, I was almost giddy at getting to experience the feeling of rereading Twilight for the first time through a different story. This is only book 1 in the series, but it's off to a good start. Now for my critiques: 1. The beginning is SLOW! The mother is a terrible character and there are certain details that could have been left out altogether if they weren't going to be relevant to the plot anyway. (I am aware they may come into play in the coming books, but based off of book 1 I could do without.) 2. Our MMC, Daemon Black, needs better arguing skills AND needs to learn to accept defeat. There comes a point in a book where the reader gets that a character is supposed to be broody, you don't have to feed us the same argument (word for word) every two pages. By the time we got to the end of the book, I was sure we were about to get our "happy ending"... nope. Same argument... to the very end. Me and Daemon are going to have words if this continues in the next book. 3. This one is either a great thing or a terrible thing. By the 1/3 mark, it dawned on me that I was reading alien Twilight. I know often times authors pull inspiration from other popular books/movies even if it is unintentional. For those who obsess over the Twilight Saga, reading this book and coming to that conclusion was the reason I wanted to keep reading. For others, it may be too copy and paste for their liking. All in all, I definitely recommend book 1 of the Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout and will be looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Gorgeous cover!
This new hardcover edition is just gorgeous and a must for collectors! It made me want to re-read this series again. It will always be one of my favorites and a must-read for all young readers. Oh, I liked this more than I thought I was going to, since this is not typically my favorite genre. But I found the characters to be likable, the pacing to be very engaging. By the end of the book, I wanted, no had to know, what was going to happen to Katy and Daemon and Dee. The best scenes were those where Katy and Daemon let down their defenses and communicate, and the action sequences are well done. I liked the world building here too. A solid 4 out of 5 stars for me on this one.
