page turner

It's Malibu's nature to burn. It changes. It starts again. But, again and again, it also catches fire. The Malibu fire of 1983 started on the coastline at 28150 Cliffside Drive on Saturday, August 27. It was Nina Riva's house then, hosting one of the most infamous parties in Los Angeles history. The party got out of control around midnight. By seven that morning the Malibu coastline was in flames. This is a story about that fire. But it's also about the smaller, figurative fires that changed one family's life on that same night. It's about Nina Riva, dutiful eldest daughter, adept surfer, people pleaser learning what it means to be a model who has captured the zeitgeist and lost herself along the way. It's about Jay, competitive surfer and the reputation to match, trying to figure out if he's anyone at all without the trophies and the hype. It's about Hud, loyal to a fault and so certain family is everything, hoping to reconcile putting others first with the future he desperately wants but never could have planned. It's about Kit, the youngest, the one who always feels like an afterthought, finally getting a chance to make her mark. And it's a story about the people who made this bright family what it is when they first met in the 1950s: June, the one who always stayed, and Mick Riva, the one who was always leaving for the next thing. By the end of the story Malibu will burn once again and the Riva family will be there watching it catch fire in Malibu Rising (2021) by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Malibu Rising is set in the same world as Reid's previous novels with specific nods to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six. It also lays the groundwork for her follow up title Carrie Soto is Back. The Riva family is white and although the novel touches on some income diversity with their humble beginnings, the story is largely grounded in a place of privilege for all of the main characters. The audiobook is excellently narrated by Julia Whelan. The story alternates between preparations for Nina's annual party and its disastrous conclusion over the course of one day alongside flashbacks chronicling Mick and June's own tumultuous relationship and its far-reaching consequences for their children. Shifting perspectives and an omniscient narrative give readers a proverbial bird's eye view of all of the drama as it unfolds. Themes of duty and connection play out differently for each of the Riva siblings as they grapple with complicated relationships and their varied feelings about their absentee patriarch who looms large throughout the narrative. Evocative descriptions and tight plotting make Malibu Rising immediately engrossing while summoning a time and place with such specificity readers will swear they attended the last Riva party themselves. Possible Pairings: People Person by Candice Carty-Williams, The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller, LA Weather by Maria Amparo Escandon, Jackpot Summer by Elyssa Friedland, The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo, After Dark by Haruki Murakami, Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng, The Turner House by Angela Flournoy, Commonwealth by Ann Patchett

Enjoyable read

This was an enjoyable read taking you through the construction and struggles of the Riva family. It takes you from 1959 when June and Mick fall in love and start a family to 1983 when their children are throwing their yearly party from Nina’s cliffside mansion. There are many secrets, betrayals and surprises. The audio was also well done and I looked forward to listening.

Malibu Rising

This book was not what I expected. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters, they had a lot of depth. I enjoyed the jaw-dropping moments however I wish there were more. I picked this book out as a recommendation and it got a lot of hype. I enjoyed it but I wish it wasn't so slow. The end was really good though and got me in the feels.

A Must Read

The Riva siblings have not had an easy life though to an outsider their last name would suggest otherwise. Their father, the famous Mick Riva, is America's sweetheart but to the four Riva kids - Nina, Jay, Hudson and Kit - he's a stranger. Each of them are successful in their own way no thanks to Mick and know the only people they can rely on is one another. All of Malibu is fascinated by the Rivas and their annual summer party is the event to be at and be seen at. This year's party will be no exception. By midnight the event will have turned into the wildest party Malibu has ever seen and as the sun comes up the Riva mansion will burn to the ground. What happens in those 24 hours will shift and shape the Riva siblings in new ways, fracture open old wounds and uncover long buried secrets. Some people were born to tell stories and Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of them. "Malibu Rising" is another example of her perfectly crafting a tale in a unique and gripping way that makes the characters come alive. Told through multiple timelines and perspectives "Malibu Rising" is filled with love, loss, loyalty and the strength of family ties beyond everything else. I highly recommend adding "Malibu Rising" to your TBR list. Though you can't go wrong with any TJR titles as I have yet to find one I didn't fall in love with.

Sticks with you, long after the last page.

Since I finished this book and marinated with it a bit, the more I realized I loved it. I knew while reading it was 4-4.5 stars but it's been on my mind months and months later - which to mean means a 5 star read. I think I needed the extra time to think on it, because of all of the hype. The concept of a rockstar father, and the complicated family dynamics, were intriguing to read and felt very cinematic (classic TJR). This will be a fantastic adapation (if it happens!). I loved Nina's character, and the way she cared for her siblings. The way they flipped timelines back and forth to the party was super intriguing, and kept me flipping page after page. 5/5 Stars.

Loved it!

Malibu Rising was a phenomenal book. From the first couple pages introducing us to the Riva’s, to the last pages ending the party, I was captivated the whole way through. It was a lengthy read, but there was so much drama that I just had to keep turning the page. For TJR fans, I am sure this book did not disappoint them. As for me, this was my first TJR book and I had no idea what to expect. After reading this one novel, I know for sure that I will keep buying more of her books. There just seemed a bit of something for everyone in this excellent novel. Surfing, romance, secrets, and drama all fit into around 400 pages ( again, a bit of lengthy read but definitely worth it). This book is the perfect summer read and the perfect escape when you want to travel to Malibu for a while. As someone who has never been to Malibu before, I can just imagine how warm it is from this novel. The details and descriptions of it were absolutely perfect. I almost feel like I myself have actually been there. One thing this book is really good about is details. TJR never gives up the chance to go fully descriptive on something, even if it’s just one of Nina’s outfits. Some readers may not like a lot of detail and just want to go straight to the action, but personally I loved it. I felt more connected to the story. Even if you don’t like loads of descriptions, the different dramatic conflicts in this read make up for it. Adding on to feeling connected to the story, I felt really connected to the Riva children. Nina may be the main character, but I was rooting for all four of them. We are able to know the full story of all of them, which I think is unique because sometimes we only get to know the backstory of the main character. I did like hearing the backstories of everyone, but the reason I’m giving the book 4 stars is because sometimes we got a little too much of the backstories. I loved hearing the Riva’s, but I felt a little bored hearing the ones of the guests at the party. Towards the end of the book, it felt a little chaotic trying to keep up with everyones. The novel was still amazing though. It wasn’t predictable at all. When I thought one thing would happen, the exact opposite happened. When I thought the characters were at their lowest, a new problem would occur. I can’t spoil the book, but I can say that it kept me on the edge of my seat. If you’re looking for an exciting beachy read, Malibu Rising is the perfect book!
