A Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Honor WinnerAt the outset of World War II, Denmark did not resist German occupation. Deeply ashamed of his nation's leaders, fifteen-year-old Knud Pedersen resolved with his brother and a handful of schoolmates to take action against the Nazis if the adults would not. Naming their secret club after the fiery British leader, the young patriots in the Churchill Club committed countless acts of sabotage, infuriating the Germans, who eventually had the boys tracked down and arrested. But their efforts were not in vain- the boys exploits and eventual imprisonment helped spark a full-blown Danish resistance. Interweaving his own narrative with the recollections of Knud himself, The Boys Who Challenged Hitler is National Book Award winner Phillip Hoose's inspiring story of these young war heroes. This thoroughly-researched and documented book can be worked into multiple aspects of the common core curriculum.

Great and inspiring read

"The boys who challenged Hitler" not only made me smarter, entertained me with action, and brought me closer to history, but also changed the way I viewed the world. This story follows a danish boy named Knud Pedersen and his buddies. This was set in occupied Denmark in the WW2 era. Knud and his "Churchill Club" (a league of teen partisans) disrupted german positions, incapacitated German assets, and helped lead the resistance against German occupation. This book is unlike any I've ever read. The unique story presentation and point of view were something of total nuance. The narrative is presented in a past-tense interview format. Phillip Hoose interviewed the late Knud Pedersen and uncovered things that would make anyone's jaw drop. I can't help but notice the sheer theme of brotherhood and comradery. Knud's story helped me to understand what friendship truly means. This book is not only a commentary on injustice and violence but is a novel to live by. Without any spoilers, the story is and continues to be, a historic text. This is based on totally true, and very real-world events. On the morning of 9 April 1940, Denmark was attacked by Germany. There was little resistance to German forces. The government decided that the German military was too powerful. Let's say, it did not stop there. Kund and his club resisted. This is a life-changing read and one of my personal favorites. I implore any high school or middle school-age student, or anyone else for that matter to experience this book.

good book

I rate this book 4/5 stars I found the story fun and interesting and the characters are also fun and interesting, people who disagree with my book say it is boring I respectfully disagree because I found it fun and engaging, they also say the story is predictable which I agree with it is predictable sometime but most of the time I didn’t see a lot of the twist coming I loved this book Philip Hoose did an amazing job writing the story, the characters and the setting. The setting was dark, gloomy and overall sad. It was a time during war, and it made me not want to go there which sounds bad, the story and pacing was pretty good sometimes he goes over ideas but overall, I loved it While overall the book was good, I wish the author made some of the twist less predictable during the story they introduced characters that seemed good but over the course of the book it was easy to tell he was going to betray the group. There was information I wish he didn’t just gloss over like why the danish government surrendered so fast I feel like he could've done more research in that area I would've like to known more Overall, the book was good and had a fun and interesting story and characters Philip Hoose did a good job making me feel like I was there, great job 4/5
