How to choose window sheers and curtains?
•Lighting and privacy. There’s a filter for that. Whether you want your room a little shady, or light and sunny, make sure to choose the right fabric weight. For a living room or kitchen, you may want to opt for sheer curtains to allow optimum lighting. A heavier piece like blackout curtain panels would be best for bedrooms or theater rooms, for less natural light and more privacy.
Helpful Hint: Go with sheers and curtains in natural hues for rooms where there is a lot of natural light. Sunlight can tend to fade bright or dark colored curtains quicker.
•Measurements. Get that measuring tape handy. You want to start by carefully measuring your window. Next, decide whether you want your curtains to hang from a pole or track. Fit the track or pole to the window—position 6” above the window and extend 6”-8” on either side. Then, measure the width of the track or pole, excluding the finials (fancy end pieces). And finally, measure the length—this depends on whether you want your sheers to fall at the sill, below the sill or to the floor.
Helpful Hint: The closer you hang your window sheers or curtains to the ceiling, the higher your walls will look. This adds desirable height to your room.
•Fabric. The right time to be a little material-istic. The kind of fabric you select depends on the look you want.
Types of Curtains:
1. Sheer Curtains are wispy panels of semi-transparency fabric for moderate privacy. Polyester sheers have some sheen for a more formal look while cotton sheers offer a casual look and lace sheers create a traditional look.
2. Drapery Panels are solid pieces of fabric, perfect for a media room, bedroom or any room to block light and add privacy. Choose easy cotton or polyester to velvets, silks and tapestries.
Helpful Hint: Before you make your purchase, bring home a fabric swatch and hold it up to your window to see how it functions and looks in the room.
•Aesthetic. Big and bold, or simple and subtle. You want to incorporate your personal style when choosing window sheers and curtains. Go with a patterned piece to pull in a hue from your particular color palette. Bold colors are fun in bedrooms, especially kids’ rooms. For a cozy reading nook, you could try a neutral shade for a soft and casual look.
Helpful Hint: Take inspiration from catalogs (cough, cough—Macy’s!) or maybe even from your friend’s house, but most importantly, have fun with the aesthetic and make it your own!
