America's beloved and distinguished historian presents, in a book of breathtaking excitement, drama, and narrative force, the stirring story of the year of our nation's birth, 1776, interweaving, on both sides of the Atlantic, the actions and decisions that led Great Britain to undertake a war against her rebellious colonial subjects and that placed America's survival in the hands of George Washington. In this masterful book, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence-when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper. Based on extensive research in both American and British archives, 1776 is a powerful drama written with extraordinary narrative vitality. It is the story of Americans in the ranks, men of every shape, size, and color, farmers, schoolteachers, shoemakers, no-accounts, and mere boys turned soldiers. And it is the story of the King's men, the British commander, William Howe, and his highly disciplined redcoats who looked on their rebel foes with contempt and fought with a valor too little known.

An excellent read for those learning US history

Those who oppose my opinion state that it does not nearly live up to any of McCullough’s other pieces. I respectfully disagree with them since I have read McCullough's other works, and despite it not being his best piece (in my opinion), it indeed does live up to his other books. Those who oppose my opinion also say that it is basically just a history textbook. Again, I must disagree with them; the book has much more life than your typical textbook due to McCullough's superb writing not only covering the just the war itself, but many other details that most would find irrelevant. Pros- The book is great for those who are beginning to learn about US history. Irrelevant little details scattered about give the book life and character, differentiating it from most historical pieces that just use surface-level facts. The American perspective is not the only point of view that is used. Many other perspectives are taken into account to better the readers understanding the unfolding events. The writing itself is very immersive; it paints a vivid image in my head of the events that I’m reading. Cons- It might not appeal to those who know quite a bit about US history already. Due to it being a historical piece, many readers may find themselves bored while reading and lose motivation to read the book. The small, unimportant details distract from the main point of the book, and despite them giving the book life, they also make the book less informative about the main idea.
