The definitive edition of the classic novel of love during wartime, featuring all of the alternate endings- Fascinating. . . serves as an artifact of a bygone craft, with handwritten notes and long passages crossed out, giving readers a sense of an author's process (The New York Times). Written when Ernest Hemingway was thirty years old and lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield—weary, demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto, the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion—this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right. This edition collects all of the alternative endings together for the first time, along with early drafts of other essential passages, offering new insight into Hemingway's craft and creative process and the evolution of one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century.

A great book to read on a beautiful rainy day

"A Farewell to Arms" by Ernest Hemingway is a captivating story about love, war, and life's struggles. It's set during World War I, and Hemingway's writing is straightforward yet deeply moving. He paints a vivid picture of the chaos and destruction of war, making you feel like you're right there on the battlefield. But amidst all the violence, there's also a beautiful love story between Frederic Henry, an American ambulance driver, and Catherine Barkley, a British nurse. Their relationship grows strong despite the dangers around them, giving them hope and comfort during the tough times. What stands out in Hemingway's novel is how real the characters feel. Frederic is a complex guy, dealing with his own doubts and fears as he navigates through the chaos of war. Catherine, on the other hand, is a strong and inspiring woman, supporting Frederic through thick and thin. Their love story is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, showing us the power of love even in the darkest of times. Besides the love story, "A Farewell to Arms" also makes us think about bigger questions like the meaning of life and the inevitability of death. Frederic's journey forces us to confront these tough topics, leaving us with plenty to ponder long after we finish the book. In summary, "A Farewell to Arms" is a timeless classic that captures the essence of human emotions like love, fear, and hope. Hemingway's simple yet powerful writing style brings the story to life, immersing us in the world of war-torn Italy and the enduring bond between Frederic and Catherine. It's a book that stays with you, reminding us of the resilience of the human spirit even in the face of adversity, it is truly one of the best books I have ever read because of it’s beautiful romance and the endurance of the mind in war.
