"—St. Louis Post-Dispatch#1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny pulls back the layers to reveal a brilliant and emotionally powerful truth in her latest spellbinding novel. When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes. Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must. And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map. Everywhere Gamache turns, he sees Amelia Choquet, one of the cadets. Tattooed and pierced. Guarded and angry.

One of the best in the series so far

These books just keep getting better and better. The entire series is a must read for mystery fans who enjoy following the lives of vividly drawn, engaging characters. As the characters lives progress forward, we are rewarded with more backstory about some of the main characters and the ingeniously crafted mystery and subplots kept me turning pages late into the night. Although this can be read as a stand alone, I strongly recommend starting at the beginning with "Still Life" and reading the entire series in order. Highly recommended

Gamache Mystery

I normally enjoy this series but this was my least favorite so far. Gamache is started a new job at the Surete. Meanwhile in Three Pines and old map was found in the walls of the Bistro. There are two mysteries, one is the mystery of the map and the other is the murder of an instructor at the Surete. I enjoyed the map mystery but the murder mystery was weak and easy to solve. The writing is good as always but there were lot of plot holes. This series should be read in order.

Not Only a Great Reckoning, but a Great Read

Book twelve in Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series is yet another mesmerizing read. Each book brings the reader back to a small, quaint town where we know many of its residents and have come to care about them. I know as a reader, I feel at home when I read each book. Gamache’s retirement has ended as he takes on the job of Commander at the Surete Academy. It’s where he wants to be, to change the way that the graduates becoming agents are better than the ones who recently graduated during times of corruption in the Surete with former leaders. It brings about a past friend and another corrupt leader working there so Gamache can observe them, along with the new cadets, and those close to graduation.

4+1/2 Stars; My Favorite Gamache Book (so far)

Without providing spoilers "A Great Reckoning" is by far my favorite of the Gamache series. I've been reading them in order and just finished this one (#12). I can't say why I loved this one more without providing multiple spoiler-alerts. But I will say that L.P. did a great job at reconciling (for me) why Armand Gamache was behaving in such an incongruent manner here and there. And it was explained to the readers at the perfect time and place within the story. I'd have given it 5+ stars for my overall rating except for that L.P. jumped the shark at one point. I can forgive that since the book would have been a couple of chapters longer without that hasty resolution.

Engaging and intriguing

I have loved all of the books that I've read in this series. The story and the characters draw you in and you don't want to leave. Although this is a murder mystery, the other stories that are happening in the book are just as engaging and intriguing. Another great book by Louise Penny! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
