In the #1 New York Times bestseller, A Long Way Gone, Ishmael Beah tells a riveting story: how at the age of twelve, he fled attacking rebels and wandered a land rendered unrecognizable by violence. By thirteen, he'd been picked up by the government army, and Beah, at heart a gentle boy, found that he was capable of truly terrible acts. My new friends have begun to suspect I haven't told them the full story of my life. "Why did you leave Sierra Leone?" "Because there is a war." "You mean, you saw people running around with guns and shooting each other?" "Yes, all the time." "Cool." I smile a little. "You should tell us about it sometime." "Yes, sometime." This is how wars are fought now: by children, hopped-up on drugs and wielding AK-47s. Children have become soldiers of choice. In the more than fifty conflicts going on worldwide, it is estimated that there are some 300,000 child soldiers. Ishmael Beah used to be one of them. What is war like through the eyes of a child soldier? How does one become a killer? How does one stop? Child soldiers have been profiled by journalists, and novelists have struggled to imagine their lives. But until now, there has not been a first-person account from someone who came through this hell and survived. This is a rare and mesmerizing account, told with real literary force and heartbreaking honesty.

A Long Way to Realization

A Long Way Gone is a book about an innocent boy learning to care and love people after a long time of slaughter.Ishmael is a boy who is thrusted to near death and anguish without the support of any adults he is forced to cope alone. These events are hard to blow off and ignore for the most part because of the factual and real evidence given placing these events in real time.Having this all known it would be very hard for anyone of us to cope with the trauma as adults let alone as children, same as Ishmael. If anything it is nothing short of amazing how Ishmael was able to cope with such losses as boys his age largely turned out permanently scared for life and unable to cope as he did

Absolute Masterpiece

This is what a war book is meant to be. To begin your life as a normal child, then become a child soldier and lose one’s true ambitions, A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah is still one of the best war narratives to this present day. It tells a true story of the war in Sierra Leone on how child soldiers were put into harsh conditions to combat rebels who were destroying their villages. A Long Way Gone does not shy away from the brutality of war but confronts it throughout the book. The characters are portrayed in such a way that you don't know who will live or die, giving the whole journey a feeling of suspense. It portrays the darkness of war and the internal struggles some of these kids had in these wars. Despite being mostly dark throughout the book, it has some light-hearted moments at the end when recovering from the war. The development from a drug addict with PTSD to a normal citizen who wants to share his story for the whole world to hear is one story that will inspire others who are facing the same struggles that he had been through.

For my english class

As I read a long way gone, I have been moved by the way each part of the book is detailed. Since Ishmael has lived in these events, you cant help but open up your eyes in whats happening in the world today. The word choice and amount of emotion used in this book makes everyone who reads it to feel grateful in the living condition they are living in. For others that have been in a similar position I can only imagine what they relive when they read this book. If you want to be moved by Ishmael’s unbelievable journey through the civil war in Sierra Leone don't hesitate to buy this book.

Truly eye opening

This book was a true eye opener to the horrors of civil war. It shows how difficult life can be especially as a child during a conflict like this. The book was very well detailed and the story wasn't hard to follow. It can be a very heavy read at times. I recommend this simply because of the fact that it gives you a point of view that is truly like no other. If you have some time this book will remind you just how good you have it.

Best book I’ve read all year!

A Long Way Gone is inspiring but also a horrific memoir that talks about the author Ishmael Beah's experiences as a child soldier in his home land Sierra Leone. Because of his vivid and strong storytelling abilities, Ishmael takes us (his audience) on a journey through the horrors of war, end of his childhood, the loss of his innocence, and the ultimate redemptive power of hope and compassion, all while he is just a young boy. This powerful and unforgettable book is a true horror story of how a young boys spirit is able to endure even the most unimaginable circumstances possible

Amazing

This book is a rollercoaster of emotion to my heart. The main character, Ishmael, has to go through a terrible war starting when he was a little boy. Ishmel saw many horrible events happen throughout the entirety of the war. Ishmael dealt with some of the worst problems. He watched many of his friends die, and he had to run from his own village as it was attacked, watching people get shot. He would walk with the friends he had left with no food or water. No matter where he went the rebels would find a way to destroy it. After being pushed over the edge, he became a boy soldier in the war. When two years had passed, his general forced him to go to rehab. Believe me when I say, you want to read this thrilling book.
